PGA DFS Coverage for the Rocket Mortgage Classic

The PGA Tour heads from the Land of 10,000 Lakes to the Motor City for this weekend’s Rocket Mortgage Classic. Tony Finau looks to defend his 2022 title in the 5th edition of this event in Detroit. We will see birdies in bunches over the weekend as the average winning score over the last three years is 22.6 under par.

The Field: Rocket Mortgage Classic

The 2022-2023 PGA Tour season is starting to close out with just six weeks remaining after this week. Lots of players are keeping their eyes on that Top 125 cut line to make it into the FedEx Cup Playoffs. That’s a factor you should take into account when picking players at the Detroit Golf Club. We’ve got players hovering around that number and need some high finishes to get into the FedEx St. Jude Championship. We’ve got golfers taking a much-needed week off after this tough stretch to prepare for the upcoming Open Championship and others still need fine-tuning of their game. We will see Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, and Rickie Fowler tee it up this weekend.

The Course: Detroit Golf Club

The Detroit Golf Club has two 18-hole courses, the North and South. The Rocket Mortgage is set up as a stock par 72 and 17 of the holes are played on the North course but the par 4 third hole is the first hole on the South course on a typical day for the members. The course stretches out 7,340 yards with a full stock of par 5s. Two of those Par 5s are reachable in two by most every player in the field while one of them is 635 yards and was ranked as the hardest Par 5 on Tour. We will also see difficult poa greens which are typically hard to land and stick. The rough around the greens will give these players fits, so scrambling will be important and getting on the greens in regulation will be at a premium.  When you look over the history, you will see superior iron play is vital to success which means Strokes Gained: Approach.

Weather: Detroit, Michigan

It looks like the weather should be alright this weekend in Michigan for the tournament.  Thursday will be fantastic with sunny skies and temps in the low 80s. We could see some isolated thunderstorms on Friday but temps in the high 70s. Saturday has a 50/50 chance of thunderstorms throughout the day but by the time Sunday rolls around we’ll see the sun come out and temperatures in the low 80s. I would probably look to start guys in the afternoon Thursday, so they may be able to get their round in Friday before the rain comes.
