NHL DFS Showdown Playbook: Colorado Avalanche vs. St. Louis Blues
The series moves to St. Louis with both having won a game. Colorado didn’t play well in Game 2 and are hoping to play a lot better tonight. St. Louis has gotten some great goaltending from Jordan Binnington, and if he can continue his stellar play, the Blues have a chance to make it to the next round. When building your Showdown lineup, you want to make sure that you get your captain spot right. Nathan MacKinnon is always a good option, but he might have a hard time finding space against St. Louis’ top line. It is uncommon to play a defenceman in that spot, but Cale Makar isn’t just any other defenceman. He’s got so much skill and can contribute offensively.
If you’re targeting the St. Louis side, Ryan O’Reilly is the player to consider. Matching up against Colorado’s top line is certainly not a favourable matchup, but he’s got points in five straight and his shot volume is consistent. We can also probably get him at low ownership, so that’s an added bonus.
As for the rest of your lineup, you’ll have to take some risks. Artturi Lehkonen is skating in the top-six and is very affordable. He’s been decent in the playoffs so far, but he hasn’t hit value in a good minute and his matchup on paper doesn’t get any easier. Another name to look at is Nazem Kadri. With MacKinnon getting most of the attention, Kadri should be able to find some space and get a decent matchup on paper. We know he’s a good playmaker, but he can also shoot the puck. It also helps that he joins the big boys on the top power play unit.
The Blues have a ton of forwards to choose from, but the only two I would consider are Jordan Kyrou and Pavel Buchnevich. Kyrou is a player who can certainly find the back of the net and he’s a good bet to get a couple of shots on goal. Buchnevich is skating on the top line, but that hasn’t produced many points and he only has 19 shots on goal in his last ten games. Both players are reasonably priced, so you can get away with playing both.
On the back end, Nick Leddy and Niko Mikkola are two value players worth considering. Colorado is a team that shoots the puck and both players are capable of blocking shots. Leddy is going to see a decent amount of ice time, so that does help his chances of hitting value. Mikkola played only 15-minutes last game, but at $2000 on DraftKings, if he can hit the blocked shots bonus, that would be more than enough or him to hit value.
I’m not a big fan of goalies when building Showdown lineups, but Jordan Binnington has done enough to convince me that we should at least consider him. He’s going to see a good amount of shots, and he’s proven that he can stop them. The fact that he’s playing at home also helps boost his value a bit. If you aren’t going crazy on Colorado, you should have enough salary left over to get him into your lineup.
