NHL DFS Picks, Projections, Lineups & Stacks Today: Tuesday Playbook

Published: Jan 21, 2025
Welcome to another Playbook of NHL DFS picks! We have a nice eight-game slate with teams in very good spots. There are some very expensive options we could target, but the value players are going to help you take down a GPP.
We don’t need to be big today, we just need to target the right players in the right matchups. Let’s get right into it.
NHL DFS Picks & Daily Fantasy Playbook Today, January 16th
Before we get into DFS, let’s make some pick’em picks for the night over on Sleeper.
There are lots of ways we try to fill your wallet over here at Fantasy Alarm and this is just another option.
NHL Pick 'Em Picks On Sleeper Fantasy Today
- Leon Draisaitl O/2.5 SOG
- Filip Forsberg O/0.5 G
- Leevi Merilainen O/25.5 SV
Connor McDavid is out of the lineup serving the first of his three-game suspension, so Leon Draisaitl is going to have to put this team on his back and generate some offence. He’s not a high-volume shooter, but he scores goals and will see a healthy amount of ice time. This is a great spot for him.
Filip Forsberg has scored a goal in five games straight and has a matchup against the San Jose Sharks. The Predators have been playing better of late, and their top line has been cooking. If anyone can score a goalie tonight, it’s Forsberg.
Leevi Merilainen has been a nice surprise for the Senators. He is 6-2-1 on the season and hasn’t allowed a goal in his last two road starts. The Rangers are top-10 in shots on goal at home, but they aren’t a high scoring offence. Merilainen is a risky option, but one that could vault you to the top of a GPP.
Tuesday Salary Cap DFS Picks
Goalie Of The Day: Jake Oettinger - DAL
There are a couple of goalies in very good matchups, but Jake Oettinger offers us the best value. Carolina is playing their second game in as many nights and Dallas is an elite team at home. Oettinger has some very impressive numbers at home too, so this is a spot where we can get him at low ownership and not have to eat the chalk.
Honorable Mention: Sam Montembeault - MTL
The Canadiens have been a much better team of late and Sam Montembeault is a big part of that. He got roughed up last game against the Leafs, but overall, he is a good goalie. Tampa Bay is playing their second game in as many nights, but they still have a very good offence. This is a boom-or-bust play.
Player Of The Day: Steven Stamkos - NSH
If you don’t want to pay up for Filip Forsberg, your next-best option would be Steven Stamkos. The veteran got off to a slow start this season, but he has been better to start the second half. He doesn't shoot the puck much, but he has goals in his last three games and has a great matchup against the Sharks. His price tag being under $6000 on DraftKings is also very appealing.
Honorable Mention: Sam Reinhart - FLA
The Panthers are facing the Ducks for the second time in less than five days and there could be some fireworks before it’s all said and done. Sam Reinhart was ejected last game for his knee-on-knee hit, but he isn’t a dirty player. If the Ducks go out looking for revenge, the Panthers are going to light them up. Reinhart hasn’t scored in the last three games, so he's due for a few to find the back of the net.
Value Play Of The Day: Mackie Samoskevich - FLA
We are going straight to the bottom of the barrel for this player. Mackie Samoskevich is skating on the second line, the second power play unit and is seeing about 16 minutes per game. That’s decent for a player who is $2500 on DK. The opportunity for him is there and all he needs is one point to hit value. Not an impossible task.
Honorable Mention: Mattias Ekholm - EDM
I don’t have a ton of faith in the Edmonton Oilers tonight, but I do think there is some value in Mattias Ekholm. It looks like he will join the top power play unit with McDavid out, which can only help boost his value. The offence might not always be there, but he does kill penalties and play a lot. His floor is high enough to consider him as part of an Edmonton stack if you’re feeling brave.
Stack Of The Day - NSH PP1 (Filip Forsberg - Jonathan Marchessault - Roman Josi)
As much as I love Stamkos tonight, we need players in our stack that are going to shoot the puck and all three names above do exactly that. We could very well get between 10-15 shots from this trio. Add in a couple of goals and assists and you’re looking at really good value. I know they are expensive and it’s chalk, but we can't simply ignore them.
