NHL DFS Picks & Daily Fantasy Playbook Today, October 19th
Do you smell that? Yeah, it’s Saturday night hockey! We have a massive 9-game slate and some great options to choose from. NHL DFS has been quite interesting to start the year, but have no fear, our team is here to guide you.
Today’s NHL DFS Slate Overview
The Minnesota Wild, New York Islanders, Vancouver Canucks and New Jersey Devils are all projected to score over 3.5 goals tonight, so that’s where we will be starting. There is a ton of value to choose from, so we’ll be able to pay up for those elite superstars. As always, picking the right goalie is key. Let’s not fall into the trap of a mediocre goalie against a good team.
NHL DFS Pick'em Picks on Sleeper Fantasy
Before we get into DFS, let’s make some pick’em picks for the night over on Sleeper. There are lots of ways we try to fill your wallet over here at Fantasy Alarm and this is just another option.
Sleeper NHL Picks, Saturday, October 19th:
- Noah Dobson O/1.5 BLKS
- Anthony Duclair O/2.5 SOG
- Connor Bedard O/0.5 Points
Noah Dobson plays a ton of minutes and is as consistent as it gets. He has blocked two or more shots in every game this year and that trend won’t change tonight.
Sticking with the Islanders, Anthony Duclair's current shot prop is too low. Montreal is giving up a ton of quality chances and they will be without Kaiden Guhle. I expect Duclair to smash this line by a mile.
The Buffalo Sabres are a mess. They can’t defend and they are giving up a ton of goals. Connor Bedard is elite, so asking him to get just one point tonight seems easy.
Saturday Salary Cap DFS Picks
Goalie Of The Day: Petr Mrazek - CHI
There is no question that Petr Mrazek is better on home ice than on the road. The veteran netminder was solid at home last year and has picked up right where he left off. Buffalo does have some skill up front, but nothing that makes me want to fade Mrazek at his $7600 price tag on DraftKings. That is value too good to pass up on.
Play Of The Day: Kirill Kaprizov - MIN
Kirill Kaprizov has only one goal in four games this season, but he is still one of the best players in the league. Columbus isn’t very good defensively and Kaprizov is going to want to bounce back from a weird game against St. Louis, which saw him finish with two assists, but no shots on goal in 27 MINUTES of ice time. Yeah, that’s not a typo. That game didn’t even go to overtime. I don’t expect his volume to be that high in this one, but I do think he can hit value.
Value Play Of The Day: Lane Hutson - MTL
Lane Hutson is slowly becoming the player Habs fans are expecting him to be. He played a season-high 30 minutes last game and didn’t look out of place. Mike Matheson will play in this one, but with no Guhle, Hutson may once again see an increase in minutes. We know he can contribute offensively, but he has also blocked seven shots in the last two games. He has a great floor and won’t break the bank.
Stack Of The Day - CHI PP1 (Connor Bedard - Nick Foligno - Seth Jones)
I know it’s early in the year, but Chicago is 5th in power play percentage (31.3%) while the Sabres are ranked 27th on the penalty kill (71.4%). That’s a matchup that we can exploit at a pretty reasonable price. We know what Connor Bedard brings to the table, same story for Seth Jones, but it’s Nick Foligno that I like the most. He is skating on the top line and is only $3700 on DK. He has three goals in five games and could add more to his total by the end of the night. Stack the PP and don’t look back.

Player News
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters that Zach Eflin (lat) is likely to return and start Sunday against the Angels
It was assumed that Eflin would be back this weekend, but now we have a concrete date. The 31-year-old may not be at full strength after throwing fewer than 60 pitches in his rehab start, but the Orioles feel confident enough to have the right-hander back on the bump for the series finale against the Angels.
Riley Greene is not in the lineup for the first game of a doubleheader against the Rockies on Thursday.
Greene will get a break and likely return to the lineup for the second game of the twin-billing. Zach McKinstry will get the start in left field while Greene rests.
Panthers released TE Jordan Matthews.
Matthews converted to tight end a few years ago and hasn’t made much noise at the position. The change has, however, likely kept him in the league for a few more seasons. He appeared in four games with the Panthers last year but didn’t record any stats on offense. The Panthers also released or waived WR Dax Milne, C Andrew Raym, and TE Colin Granger.
Yu Darvish (elbow) is facing live hitters on Thursday.
Darvish has been throwing bullpen sessions and traveled to the team’s complex in Arizona to face live hitters on Thursday. It will be his first time facing live batters since a spring training appearance on March 13th. He will likely need a few sessions like this before the Padres can map out a rehab appearance timeline for him.
Adael Amador is starting at second base and batting ninth for the Rockies on Thursday.
Amador has now started three of the last four games at second base for the Rockies. He’s gone just 7-for-43 this season with 15 strikeouts in 16 games. He’s just 22 years old, so there is plenty of time for him to adjust to the MLB level, but he doesn’t need to be on redraft radars right now.
Jackson Holliday is playing second base and batting second for the Orioles on Thursday against the Twins.
With Cedric Mullins sitting out on Thursday, Gunnar Henderson will bat lead off, and Holliday will jump up from sixth in the order to second. Holliday is riding a hot streak right now, and the Orioles are taking advantage. This is likely just a one-game sample with no Mullins or Adley Rutschman in the lineup, but Rutschman has been struggling, so perhaps it could become a more permanent spot in the lineup for Holliday moving forward.
