NHL DFS Picks, Projections, Lineups & Stacks Today: Monday Playbook

Published: Jan 27, 2025
We have a five-game slate to kick off the week's NHL DFS picks, and it's highlighted by the return of Connor McDavid.
After a three-game suspension, he is back and, of all of today's NHL DFS projections, he's the one to focus on tonight.
NHL DFS Picks & Daily Fantasy Playbook Today, January 27th
We are at the final two weeks of NHL games before the break due to the 4 Nations Face-Off.
I don't expect any massive changes in how teams operate, outside of a starting goalie getting an extra day of rest leading up to the break.
NHL DFS Pick'em Picks on Underdog With Promo Code ALARM
- Timo Meier Higher Than 2.5 Shots on Goal
- Michael Bunting Higher Than 2.5 Shots on Goal
- Evan Bouchard Higher Than 0.5 Points
With Nico Hischier set to miss tonight's game, the New Jersey Devils have moved their lines around a bit and it puts Timo Meier in a good spot. He should be the primary shooter on the second forward line, alongside Dawson Mercer and Stefan Noesen. He comes in with 23 shots on goal in his last 10 games, which should be his baseline rate of production on this line.
Michael Bunting of the Pittsburgh Penguins could also be in for an expanded role on the second forward line, as Evgeni Malkin was injured in their most recent game and didn't return. Malkin's status is up in the air for tonight, which could put Bunting in a spot to be more of a shooter tonight. He comes in with seven shots on goal in his last three games and has a very favorable matchup against the San Jose Sharks.
Evan Bouchard is the defender on the first power-play unit for the Edmonton Oilers, who come in with a slate-high 4.2 implied goal total against the Seattle Kraken. McDavid being back is an immediate boost to their offense and with Bouchard coming in with 7 points in his last 10 games, he can build on that consistency tonight.
Monday Salary Cap DFS Picks
Goalie Of The Day: Jake Allen - NJD
With Jacob Markstrom out for multiple weeks, Jake Allen should be seeing the majority of the crease work for the New Jersey Devils. They come in as solid -144 road favorites over the Philadelphia Flyers, who are struggling on offense right now.
Since the start of the month, the Flyers have scored 1.99 Goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the eighth-lowest in the league. Over that same time and the same situations, the Devils have only allowed 1.93 Goals, which is the sixth-best in the league.
Allen isn't as good as Markstrom, we can all agree on that. But Allen has a solid team in front of him and the Flyers are struggling on offense.
Play Of The Day: Connor McDavid - EDM
He's back. After a three-game suspension, Connor McDavid is back for the Edmonton Oilers and they're rocking a 4.2 implied goal total against the Seattle Kraken.
Obviously, McDavid is amazing and really needs no explanation, but I love the narrative of him coming back and it's an awesome matchup. Since the start of the month, the Kraken are in the bottom 10 of the NHL in both Goals allowed and Total Shot Attempts Allowed, both per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations.
The multi-point potential is always there for McDavid and I expect him to come out flying after his three-game suspension.
Value Play Of The Day: Will Smith - SJS
We all know the San Jose Sharks aren't good, but they do offer some good DFS value options. Let's turn to Will Smith, who comes in with five points and six shots on goal over his last five games.
While that doesn't jump off the page, Smith is only $2.8K on DraftKings, while seeing time on the first forward line and the second power-play unit. Also, a matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins is nothing to shy away from and could be a game to target for plenty of fantasy production.
Stack Of The Day: NJ PP1 (Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, Dougie Hamilton, Timo Meier)
While the Edmonton Oilers are an awesome stack tonight and I'll be looking to get some exposure to them, they are very expensive and can hamper lineup construction on a slate where we don't have a ton of value options.
The New Jersey Devils are just a bit less expensive and still have a solid matchup versus the Flyers, who have allowed 2.39 Goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations since the start of January, which is the 12th-worst in the league.
A three-player stack of Hughes, Bratt, and Hamilton is also very viable if you have to leave out Meier due to salary constraints.

Player News
Elly De La Cruz went 2-for-4 with a run scored, a stolen base and an RBI against the Padres on Friday.
Bryan Reynolds went 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, two runs scored, and three RBI in a 9-1 win over the Mets.
This game was never in doubt as the Pirates jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back. Reynolds put the icing on the cake with a three-run home run in the sixth inning and has been scalding hot of late. One of the biggest disappointments through the first half of the season, he may be quickly righting the ship with 10 hits – including four doubles and this home run – in his last five games. He’s approaching a .700 OPS for the first time all season and could have a big second half ahead of him.
Spencer Steer went 3-for-4 with three home runs and four RBI against the Padres on Friday.
Mitch Keller allowed five hits and one run with one walk and four strikeouts across 5 1/3 innings in a win over the Mets on Friday.
Despite plenty of hard contact by the Mets, Keller did well to keep them off the board. Of their 12 hard-hit balls, the only one that produced a run was a solo home run from Juan Soto. Keller’s lineup spotted him a four-run lead after the second inning and he pitched like it, leaning on his fastball and seemingly not afraid to leave pitches over the heart of the plate to let the Mets put it in play. It was a fine start, but we’d have hoped to at least get a quality start as he was pitching with such a comfortable lead. He’s lined up to face the Cardinals at home next time out.
Juan Soto went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk on Friday against the Pirates.
Soto’s home run represented the Mets’ lone run in a horrible, blowout loss against Pittsburgh in this one. While the Mets fell flat, Soto continued what’s been an incredible month. With two games left in June, he’s up to 11 home runs with a 1.259 OPS and 10 more walks than strikeouts. That’s inconceivably good and he’s returned to being one of the best hitters in baseball.
Byron Buxton filled up the box score in Friday night’s 4-1 victory over the Tigers, going 1-for-4 with a solo homer, walk, two runs scored and a stolen base.
Buxton clobbered a two-out 425-foot (111.3 mph EV) solo shot off of Sawyer Gipson-Long in the fifth inning that extended the Twins’ lead to 2-0. He then drew a leadoff walk in the seventh inning, swiped second base, took third on a ground ball and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Willi Castro. With the impressive showing of power and speed, the 31-year-old outfielder is now hitting .278/.346/.560 with 18 long balls, 49 RBI and 14 stolen bases in what has been an impressive all-around first half.
