NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 2/27

We are just over a week away from the trade deadline, putting us about 25 games until the end of the regular season.

It's crunch time for many teams and there's a ton to sort through with so many games on the slate. Here are our NHL picks for Thursday's action.

Blues vs. Capitals Prediction: Thursday, February 27th

The Great Eight, Alex Ovechkin, is approaching NHL history and it will be here before you know it. While goals can be variable on a game-to-game basis, shots on goal are a bit more consistent. We've seen Ovi rack up 47 shots on goal over his last 10 games, which has put him over this 3.5-shot prop in seven of those 10 games. Today's NHL predictions expect him to be busy.

The Capitals are also coming off a loss to the Calgary Flames the other night and as one of the best teams in the league, I fully expect the Caps to bounce back and come away with the win tonight. Since the start of January, the Caps have scored 2.82 Goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the fourth-best in the league. They've also only allowed 1.73 Goals in the same situations over that same time, which is the third-best in the league.

They are elite on offense and defense and primed to come away with the win over the Blues tonight. I expect Ovechkin to fire the puck at a high volume and the Caps to show why they are one of the best teams in the league to begin our NHL best bets today.

Sabres vs. Hurricanes Prediction: Thursday, February 27th

The Carolina Hurricanes have hit a bit of a rough patch with two losses on this side of the 4 Nations break, along with three losses in their last four games prior to the break. They are still one of the elite teams in the league, and back on home ice against the Buffalo Sabres, our NHL predictions believe they're in a spot to come away with the win.

Since the start of January, the Hurricanes have generated 73.53 Total Shot Attempts per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the best in the league. They haven't converted all of those shot attempts into goals, but the attempts lead to plenty of shots on goal. The Sabres are a middle-of-the-road defense and have allowed 58.24 Total Shot Attempts per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations since the start of January.

Let's turn to the Hurricanes' top-line center, Sebastian Aho, who comes in with 24 shots on goal over his last 10 games. It's a bit lower than we would normally expect but as noted, the Canes are struggling overall. Given where the Canes are in the standings, they need to right the ship and come away with a clean win, so tack them onto our NHL best bets today.
