NHL Injury Report Week 9: Nathan MacKinnon Out a Month For The Colorado Avalanche
Welcome to another edition of the Fantasy Hockey Injury Report. Every week, we will discuss some key injuries around the league and how they may affect your fantasy hockey team. It’s never easy to deal with the injury bug, but it doesn’t have to be the demise of your fantasy hockey team. Let’s take a look at who’s dealing with what this week!
Sebastian Aho - Carolina Hurricanes - Lower-body
Carolina forward Sebastian Aho missed Saturday’s game due to a lower-body injury and we don’t know if he will be available for Tuesday’s game just yet. He was absent for Friday’s practice and head coach Rob Brind’Amour said that if he didn’t practice, he wouldn’t play. We don’t know if the injury is serious or not, but we should find out Monday when the team hits the ice for practice.
Nathan MacKinnon - Colorado Avalanche - Upper-Body
The Colorado Avalanche just can’t see to avoid the injury bug. Already without a ton of top-six regulars, Nathan MacKinnon is expected to be out of the lineup for four weeks due to an upper-body injury. Mikko Rantanen is the only regular top-six forward who remains in the lineup, which isn’t good news. This likely means that MacKinnon won’t return before the New Year, so fantasy owners will have to survive the latest Colorado injury. It’s impossible to replace a player of his skill level.
Spencer Knight - Florida Panthers - Illness
Florida goaltender Spencer Knight was not dressed for the game against Tampa Bay but could be available for their game Sunday against Seattle. There has been some kind of virus going through the Panthers' locker room which has forced some key players to miss some time. Aleksander Barkov was out of the lineup for over a week due to illness and now Knight is the latest to fall sick. If he isn’t available for Sunday’s game, then we should expect him to miss at least a week.
Sean Monahan - Montreal Canadiens - Foot
Sean Monahan is currently dealing with a foot injury and there is no timetable for his return. He hurt himself against the Vancouver Canucks and was forced to leave that game early. He hasn’t been seen at practice since because he’s still wearing a protective boot. We don’t know how serious the injury is, but it doesn’t seem like he’s dealing with a break in his foot. It could just be a muscle injury, but for now, Montreal will have to find a second-line replacement while Monahan is on the shelf. The veteran forward has six goals and 11 assists so far this season.
Jack Eichel - Vegas Golden Knights - Lower-Body
Already without Alex Pietrangelo and Shea Theodore, the Vegas Golden Knights could be without Jack Eichel for at least Sunday’s game. Eichel missed two games earlier in the week, but made his return to the lineup against Philadelphia and played over 20 minutes. The word on the internet is that he’s still dealing with whatever previous injury he had, so the team may want to play it safe and rest their talented centreman before he makes the injury worse. For now, it doesn’t sound like anything serious, but it could become a problem if not handled correctly.
Darcy Kuemper - Washington Capitals - Upper-Body
Washington goalie Darcy Kuemper has missed the last three games due to an upper-body injury and we still don’t know when he might be able to return. The team has said that their starting goalie is day-to-day, so he could return at any point. Hunter Shepard is still with the team as the emergency callup, so until he is sent back down to the AHL, Kuemper will remain on the sideline. Washington does play Sunday, so hopefully, Kuemper can make a return for that game.
