2019 Fantasy Hockey: Waiver Wire Report February 9
Published: Feb 09, 2019
The NHL season is in full swing and that means so is fantasy hockey! It’s a long grind to get to the playoffs, and an even tougher challenge to win it all. Like every year, injuries are going to happen to key players, which means we need to be active on the waiver wire. The waiver wire can help you win a championship, so it’s important to add the right players at the right time. Let’s take a look at which players are worth looking adding for the upcoming week.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi - Montreal Canadiens - Center
The 18-year-old rookie is slowly becoming fantasy hockey relevant. The Montreal forward has now score six goals in his last 12 games, pushing his season total to ten. Kotkaniemi is only getting better as the season moves on, and fantasy owners may want to snatch him up before the fantasy hockey playoffs arrive. He’s 7% owned on Yahoo!, so he’s widely available. At this point in the season, the risk is minimal and the upside is real. He’s worth a look in deeper leagues.
Jason Pominville - Buffalo Sabres - Winger
The Buffalo Sabres have a decent amount of talent at right wing, but they choose to waste it with Jason Pominville. The 36-year-old has found himself on the top line with Jeff Skinner and Jack Eichel, which makes him fantasy relevant. The veteran forward only has 22-points this season, but he could add a few more to his total by playing on the top line. He isn’t seeing any power play time, so his upside is limited, but in deeper leagues, Pominville is worth the risk. As long as he’s skating on the top line, he worth a roster spot.
Zach Hyman - Toronto Maple Leafs - Winger
Zach Hyman has once again found a home on Toronto’s top line. The 26-year-old has caught fire of late-- scoring two goals and adding four assists in four games. It’s no secret that Toronto is an offensive juggernaut, and Hyman is benefiting greatly from playing with Tavares and Marner. At 30% ownership on Yahoo!, he’s more than available on the waiver wire. He’s not just a short-term solution for a team with injuries, he’s a decent pick up that can help a fantasy hockey team get into the playoffs, and contribute once there.
Jack Roslovic - Winnipeg Jets - Winger
In fantasy hockey, opportunity is key, and Roslovic is getting his opportunity. The former first-round pick in 2015 is skating on the second line with Bryan Little and Patrik Laine and on the top power play unit. That is a lot of opportunity for a 22-year-old. He only has 16 points in 54 games, but that could change over the next few weeks if he can hold on to that second line and top power play spot.
Ben Hutton - Vancouver Canucks - Defence
When we talk about fantasy hockey, Ben Hutton is rarely, if ever, mentioned. He’s totaled 11 goals in four NHL season, which doesn’t exactly scream fantasy relevant, but with Alex Edler out due to a head injury, Hutton is now getting a chance to quarterback the top power play unit, and that can only be a good thing. The 25-year-old is under 1% owned on both sites, so there’s no need to worry about his availability. Is he going to win you a fantasy hockey championship? Of course not, but he can be a short-term solution for a team in need of a defenceman. As long as Edler is out of the lineup, Hutton will get top power play time, and hopefully that leads to more points.
Cory Schneider - New Jersey Devils - Goalie
Yup, we are going to talk about Cory Schneider, again. The Devils’ continue to give the veteran goalie starts, so, he will continue to be fantasy relevant. New Jersey should be rolling with Mackenzie Blackwood, but he’s in the AHL. Keith Kinkaid is a terrible goalie, so there’s no fear that he’s going to see many starts. Fantasy owners’ don’t want to be adding Schneider to their team, but we can’t help it. If he’s available, he’s worth a roster spot. Any time a starting goalie is available on the waiver wire, he should be added. He’s not a long term solution, but if you can spot start him in favourable matchups, he won’t hurt your fantasy team too much.
