The 2022 NFL trade deadline hits keep coming, as we get another move following the T.J. Hockenson trade to the Minnesota Vikings and Chase Claypool trade to the Chicago Bears. This latest NFL trade involves a running back as a side piece in the deal, but it still has plenty of implications on fantasy football rankings and rest-of-season NFL projections. The Miami Dolphins have traded mercurial running back Chase Edmonds to the Denver Broncos with edge rusher Bradley Chubb going to Miami in the deal. This trade could impact your fantasy football waiver wire pickups for NFL Week 9 and beyond. Let's jump in and take a look at the fantasy football impact of both teams involved in this trade.

 

What the Chase Edmonds Trade Means for Fantasy Football and the Denver Broncos

After the unfortunate season-ending injury to Javonte Williams, the Broncos have looked high and low for potential replacements. Of course, Melvin Gordon has been there, but the team brought Latavius Murray in, given Mike Boone an increased role in their backfield, and signed former Colt Marlon Mack to their practice squad. Clearly, they aren’t fully happy with their situation, so they brought in Edmonds.

Edmonds, the current RB48 in PPR formats, was thought to take on a sizable role after his big off-season contract with the Dolphins. So far, he’s only carried the ball more than 10 times just once — in Week 1. In the last four weeks, Edmonds has a combined 6.3 fantasy points while averaging just 27% of snaps. Not ideal.

His acquisition by the Broncos represents a fresh start for Edmonds, where he will likely handle a good chunk of third-down work and some two-minute offense snaps. All in all, his fantasy value doesn’t change all that much; he’s still a timeshare back, going to a worse offensive environment.

All three of Edmonds, Murray, and Gordon should certainly be rostered in fantasy leagues, but the trouble now is having to start one of them. Let’s face it: putting a Broncos running back into your lineup is never a fun click. Gordon would be the “best” (used very loosely) back to play if given the choice of all three Denver backs. This seems like a fluid situation that still has to work itself out and we’ll have to wait almost two weeks as Denver is on bye in Week 9.

 

What the Chase Edmonds Trade Means for Fantasy Football and the Miami Dolphins

Edmonds signed a two-year contract worth $12.1 million just eight months ago, presumably to be the starting running back in Miami. Two days later, the Dolphins signed Raheem Mostert to potentially muddy up that backfield that already included Myles Gaskin and, at the time, Sony Michel.

Fast forward to today, where the Dolphins clearly have buyer’s remorse as they shipped Edmonds out to Denver. What does this do for the remaining backs in Miami.

Mostert had already taken over the backfield by Week 3, which his snaps reaching 60-70% while running the most routes as well. Edmonds was getting some filler work as a pass-catching back and spelling Mostert on occasion, but plenty of other capable running backs can handle that.

The Dolphins also brought in Jeff Wilson from the 49ers shortly after the Edmonds trade was announced, so Miami turns into “San Francisco East” thanks to the ties with head coach Mike McDaniel. Wilson should slot in as the primary spell for Mostert as one (or both) of Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed round out the depth at the position.

As far as immediate fantasy implications? Mostert could have some red-zone work siphoned off to the newly-acquired Wilson, but there will be plenty of opportunity for scoring as Miami should continue to score a ton of points as the offense hits its stride. Wilson is a contingent value running back in the event that Mostert gets hurt or McDaniel has a change of heart about who should lead the backfield. Think of Wilson like Alexander Mattison: a very capable back on a quality offense that if something happens to Mostert, Wilson would be a low-end RB1 in fantasy.
