Steelers vs. Falcons Predictions For NFL Week 1, Sunday 9/8
Both these teams will go into 2024 with entirely new rooms at the most important position in football. The Steelers will go to battle with Russell Wilson with Justin Fields backing him up while the Falcons have veteran Kirk Cousins with rookie Michael Penix waiting in the wings.
The philosophies of these two offenses also are in stark contract. The Steelers will likely go with a “brute force” mentality behind Arthur Smith and his heavy personnel sets. While the Falcons and Zac Robinson will go for more of a high-flying approach. Two very new-look teams squaring off on the first slate of 2024!
Pittsburgh Steelers: The Russell Wilson Era Begins
It’s easy to forget that the Steelers were a 10-win playoff team last season. But it’s just as easy to forget that both the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cleveland Browns were without their starting quarterbacks for good chunks of the season last year. We expect Russell Wilson to be a QB upgrade, but does that mean the Steelers are actually contenders?
Mike Tomlin is staking his reputation on it - he has never gone below .500 in a season as a coach and he’s not looking to start now. The Steelers do have a lot of movie parts here as they not only have the new quarterback but a new play-caller in Arthur Smith.
Smash mouth football with a lot of different tight ends, running backs, and even fullbacks is his game so we’ll have to see how quickly this team can adjust to that mindset. And to life without target hog Diontae Johnson. Having guys like T.J. Watt, Patrick Queen, Minkah Fitzpatrick, and Cameron Heyward on the other side of the ball goes a long way.
Pittsburgh Steelers: The Kirk Cousins Era Begins
The Falcons quietly had a tremendous offseason in 2023 before the season started. They brought back key offensive linemen, drafted Bijan Robinson, and signed Jessie Bates. Their lack of success really goes to show how important the quarterback position is.
The Falcons wouldn’t make that mistake again. They not only signed veteran Kirk Cousins, but they used pick 8 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft on future QB Michael Penix They then used free agency and trades to load up with guys like Matthew Judon, Darnell Mooney, and Justin Simmons.
Steelers vs. Falcons Odds, Spreads, Total & Betting Lines
As promised, the latest Steelers vs. Falcons odds can be found below courtesy of BetMGM Sportsbook:
- Point Spread: Pittsburgh Steelers +3 (-105) vs. Atlanta Falcons -3 (-130)
- Money Line: Pittsburgh Steelers (+140) vs. Atlanta Falcons (-165)
- Game Total (Over/Under): Over 42 (+140) vs. Under 42 (-165)
Steelers vs. Falcons Point Spread: Steelers +3 (-105 at BetMGM Sportsbook)
With so much uncertainty surrounding both teams on offense and defensive-minded head coaches, we would typically take the under on a game like this. But -165 is just too much juice to lay down in our Steelers vs. Falcons predictions.
Many of us believe in Mike Tomlin as a coach. And I personally believe in Russell Wilson. The dink and dunk offense of Joe Lombardi and Sean Payton was not a place for his playstyle to succeed. Even then (and despite missing two games) he still had a top 5 TD/INT ratio. His 29 total passing+rushing touchdowns were more than Patrick Mahomes. I would not be shocked to see him bounce back with the Steelers.
Now, I’m not saying that the Falcons can’t be a great team or even win this game. But there are a lot of moving parts for both offenses so we could see an adjustment period here with some sloppy football. I expect this game to be a grind and the Steelers to keep it close, so we’ll take the three points on this one.
