2022 NFL Training Camp Report August 26: Could Aaron Donald Face Suspension After Rams-Bengals Fight?
We're getting closer and closer to the start of the 2022 fantasy football season and every bit of news, injury updates, and practice reports are crucial right now. As you prepare for your fantasy football drafts or looking to make moves on the fantasy football waiver wire, it's important to stay on top of the biggest NFL news and headlines coming out of Training Camp and Preseason action. Today's report features Aaron Donald being involved in the Rams/Bengals fight during a joint practice. We also have Dameon Pierce continuing to rise up fantasy football rankings and Antonio Gibson possibly sliding in fantasy football ADP yet again. Plus, we have some updates on players on the NFL injury report. Let's get to it all and dish out fantasy football advice for the biggest NFL training camp news.
Aaron Donald Involved in Rams-Bengals Fight
Sometimes when NFL teams do these joint practices, we see small skirmishes flare up or some pushing and shoving between two guys. Rarely, though, do you see full-fledged brawls with star players throwing haymakers with the opposing team’s helmet. That brings us to Aaron Donald, who was right in the middle of a practice fight involving the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals. As the video below shows, Donald was seen swinging a helmet at Bengals players during the fight. This is obviously not a good look for the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and you have to wonder if any suspension or discipline could be coming. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the NFL is unlikely to suspend or punish Donald or any other participant in the fight because the teams themselves are responsible for overseeing conduct at these joint practices. Still, the video doesn't lie and the backlash could result in the league forcing its hand – especially since Donald channeled his inner Myles Garrett.
Texans RB Dameon Pierce Shines in Preseason Finale
There’s been a ton of buzz in recent weeks that fourth-round rookie Dameon Pierce could end up being the Houston Texans’ lead running back this season. In Thursday night’s preseason game, we received some more confirmation of that possibility. Pierce played with the Texans’ starting offense and ran for 37 rushing yards and a TD on six carries, averaging 6.2 ypc in the process. It’s tough not to overreact to any rookie RB that’s been as productive as Pierce this summer. Last night’s performance should only boost his fantasy football stock once again as the ADP continues to trend up.
Commanders RB Antonio Gibson To Be Kick Returner?
How often do you see an NFL lead running back also be the team’s kick returner? Well, we might have that situation in Washington this season. Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said yesterday that he thinks Antonio Gibson will be the team’s top kick returner this year, per Sam Fortier of the Washington Post. On the one hand, this gives Gibson some unexpected upside for fantasy football if he can break off a kickoff return TD here and there – and even better if your league counts return yardage. However, this does not bode particularly well for those that are banking on Gibson being the clear lead RB for the Commanders. Instead, this could mean that rookie Brian Robinson Jr. is the guy getting carries on early downs while Gibson operates more as the pass-catching back. He could still be plenty valuable in PPR leagues, but the Washington backfield is trending towards being a split workload more and more.
Jets WR Denzel Mims Requests Trade
New York Jets wide receiver Denzel Mims has formally requested a trade from the team, according to his agent Ron Salvin. The former second-round pick of the 2020 Draft has voiced his frustrations to both the media and head coach Robert Saleh during camp and he’s clearly had enough. Mims feels like he should be a starter on the Jets offense but apparently hasn’t gotten the opportunity, per his agent’s statement below. We’ll see if the Jets end up moving him, but the return in a trade at this point might be small. The team could cut him as well, but expect Mims to be on another team by Week 1 either way. Keep an eye on his landing spot because this is still a talented receiver who could emerge as a starter and viable fantasy football option with a change of scenery.
Titans WR Treylon Burks Misses Practice
It hasn’t been the best preseason for the Tennessee Titans’ first-round pick and a missed practice doesn’t help with two weeks to go before the regular season. Rookie wide receiver Treylon Burks sat out Thursday’s practice for an undisclosed reason. Kayla Anderson of WKRN in Nashville reports that Burks was instead on the exercise bike after leaving practice early on Wednesday. Hopefully this isn’t anything serious, but it’s worth monitoring if this injury lingers into Week 1.
Falcons WR Drake London Remains Sidelined
With the regular season two weeks away, any big-name player that’s missing practices right now due to injury is a bit worrisome. For Atlanta Falcons rookie WR Drake London, it’s concerning that he remains out due to his knee injury suffered in the August 12th preseason game. Maybe the Falcons are just playing it safe with their first-round pick, but two weeks of practice missed because of a lower-body injury cannot go ignored. Monitor this situation, though there’s still time for London to get back out there before Week 1.
