You hear it all the time.

“Zero RB is the only way."

“You can wait on QB."

“TE is deep this year."

“Wait on sleeper WRs."

All of these things can be true. But above all, there is one truth: VALUE is king.

You won’t know who your best ball opponents are or how they're approaching the draft. For all you know, you might be drafting with 11 Zero RB zealots.

So the smartest strategy for your best ball fantasy football drafts is to know ALL the strategies. Then you can be like water.

Instead of looking at all of these different schools of thought, let's dive in to how you should approach your roster construction from a round standpoint of your best ball fantasy football drafts.

Early Rounds

In the early part of your best ball drafts, take the best available players. You don’t need to set a lineup and it’s a long season. Focus on the players you truly believe will score the most fantasy points.

In these rounds, don’t worry about adhering to a specific strategy or stacking or strength of schedule or diversifying your positions or bye weeks or anything. Get the best possible players. And, if necessary, pivot to a specific strategy down the stretch. But that comes later, not first.

Middle Rounds

You should never go into a draft saying, “I’m going Zero RB." You can, however, walk out of a draft saying something like: “there was a lot of value early at WR and TE, so I took that and had to pivot to a bit of a Zero RB build." That all happens in the later rounds.

The middle rounds is also where you can lean into stacking or bye weeks or strength of schedule or whatever other tiebreakers you want to use once the draft gets muddy. But know that they are just that - tiebreakers. In your fantasy football best ball drafts, you should always focus on value.

Late Rounds

Don’t be afraid to be different in the late rounds of your drafts - especially in the big tournaments. As Best Ball philosopher Pete Overzet might tell you, “scroll the F down."

These late rounds are where you plant your flags. Get YOUR guys. Differentiate your roster from others. That’s how you win big. Go for upside. Rookies have historically been a great upside gamble. But don’t sleep on the bounce-back vets either.

Remember: you're not at risk of missing any big performances week-by-week. If a player goes off, they WILL be counted in your weekly score. That's the beauty of best ball fantasy football.
