Angels recalled RHP Michael Darrell-Hicks from Triple-A Salt Lake.
He’ll take the place of the injured Ben Joyce (shoulder) in the Angels’ bullpen. Darrell-Hicks spent one day with the Angels last weekend but didn’t appear in a game. He’s expected to be utilized in a middle relief role this time around.
Angels placed RHP Ben Joyce on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.
This comes less than two days after Joyce told reporters that he wasn’t dealing with any physical issues after experiencing a decline in velocity during Tuesday’s outing against the Rays. Sigh. No word on the extent of the injury or how long Joyce may be shelved for. Michael Darrell-Hicks was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake to take his place in the Halos’ bullpen.
FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz reports that Ohio State RB TreVeyon Henderson completed top-30 visits with the Cowboys, Bengals and Panthers.
Schultz adds that Henderson “has had several Zoom meetings with other teams as well.” Henderson generally sits in the Nos. 2-4 spots, positionally, on draft boards. The former Ohio State player cleared triple-digit carry totals in all four college seasons and earned at least 22 targets in 3-of-4. At 5-foot-10, 202 pounds, Henderson is perhaps on the small side, but his dual-threat skillset will make him a fantasy-friendly prospect in year one.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that Jaylen Wells is expected to miss the rest of the 2024-25 season.
Wells took a hard fall on Tuesday night, and the final diagnosis is that he suffered a broken right wrist, a concussion and a facial contusion. None of those injuries should impact his availability for next season, but Memphis will have to finish out this season without him. Wells, who will likely earn All-Rookie honors, averaged 10.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.7 triples in 79 games as a rookie after being drafted 39th overall last summer. Vince Williams Jr. should start the rest of the regular season and post season in place of Wells.
Friday’s scheduled contest between the Orioles and Blue Jays in Baltimore has been postponed due to inclement weather.
Friday’s scheduled starters — Tomoyuki Sugano and Bowden Francis — are expected to pitch on Saturday. Friday’s postponed game will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on July 29.
The Pelicans signed Elfrid Payton to a standard contract.
Initially on a 10-day contract, the standard deal ensures Payton will be available for New Orleans’ final two games of the season. While the veteran point guard does not provide much value as a scorer, he’s been a positive asset in the assist category. Payton has averaged 9.6 assists per game over the past two weeks. How much he plays in the final two games depends on the availability of Jose Alvarado, who’s questionable for Friday’s game against the Heat.
