This is one of the biggest weeks of the season because it’s trade deadline week and once you see a team make a confirmed move, immediately attack the waiver wire because rotations will be loosened up and more bench players will get more playing time while newly acquired players learn to adjust to their new teams. This is the time when short-term solution-type players become mainstays in their team’s rotation. Don’t hesitate because you’ll lose out on a potential game-changing player.
Glenn Robinson III SG, SF GSW-38% Ownership: The Warriors could be looking to make moves and it’s hard to tell which complimentary weapons are truly on the trading block, but Robinson has been one of their strongest defensive players all season. He’s been on a tear lately scoring in double figures in his last five games including two 20-plus point games in his last three. He’s grabbed steals and blocked shots in two of his last three games. Robinson has blocked shots in four of his last five games. On offense, he often waits to be fed at the arc and he’ll often score a lot off of three-pointers, but he does just enough defensively to be considered a multi-category producer. He hasn’t grabbed many boards in his last couple of games but he’s still averaging 4.7 rebounds per game. As long as he’s still on the team after Thursday, he’ll continue playing high 20’s-low 30’s minutes.
Jalen Brunson PG DAL-17% Ownership: With Luka Doncic once again sidelined for the next couple of weeks, Brunson will see a bump in playing time. Seth Curry is dealing with a minor injury and it will be Brunson battling Delon Wright and J.J. Barea for playing time. He’s coming off of a 27-point game and he’s hit double-digits in 2 of his last 3 games. Brunson will help facilitate the offense when he’s on the court with Curry (when healthy) and because Barea can play off the ball, Brunson will be able to help out more with assists. He’s dished at least three dimes in three of his last four games. Brunson will look to attack the basket (like Doncic) and that will separate him from the other guards because Curry and Tim Hardaway Jr. like to stay exclusively at the arc. Brunson should be able to see 20 or more minutes in the Mavericks rotation for at least the next few weeks.
Jae Crowder F MEM-22% Ownership: He’s not an exciting player to add, but he has all of the opportunity in the world to succeed in the Grizzlies offense. Brandon Clarke is a bit banged up and Jaren Jackson Jr. has issues staying out of foul trouble and Crowder will benefit by picking up more shots. Since returning from injury, Crowder has scored 15-plus points and grabbed steals in his last 2 games. He’ll help out on the perimeter defensively and could very well be the team’s best perimeter defender. Crowder will step inside the arc and grab long rebounds and he’s actually grabbed 6.2 boards per game this season. Unlike Taurean Prince , who will just keep shooting from the arc even when missing shots, Crowder will actually switch it up and go into attack-mode and he’ll try driving the lane and drawing contact which makes him not just a bailout shooter from beyond the arc. His minutes are safe and he should absolutely be on fantasy rosters.
Landry Shamet PG LAC-17% Ownership: While Shamet is a bit more limited with a healthier Clippers squad, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard have been nicked up, and the team will have no problem holding them out for a game. George may even be on a minutes restriction for another few games and that’s where Shamet will pick up more minutes, He’s now scored in double figures in his last nine games. He’s helped bring up the ball a bit but won’t do it as much with Patrick Beverley healthy. He’s contributed three-plus assists in three of his last four games and he’ll often play off the ball and be a spot-up shooter from long-range. Expect him to continue to play deep into games for the next week or two. If he doesn’t help produce in other categories and then he starts missing his triples, feel free to release him but with how the Clippers manage their roster, Shamet should have a safe floor when it comes to playing time because of how conservative they are with their star players.
Danuel House Jr. SG, SF HOU-25% Ownership: House took advantage of James Harden being out, but even with the Rockets nearly at full-strength, he still gets a true rotation commitment from the Rockets Coaches. House has scored 11 or more points in 3 of his last 4 games and he’ll look to set up a good amount from beyond the arc. He does bring value defensively and that will keep him in the game because the Rockets lack defensive weapons. Clint Capela has been a bit banged up and the Rockets have gone small with P.J. Tucker playing at Center and that will also benefit House because it opens up more Forward minutes for him. House has grabbed multiple steals in three of his last five games. He’s even blocked shots in four of his last five games. House continues to help out on the glass and even though he lines up at the arc a lot, he’ll still crash the boards and he’s grabbed 4.1 rebounds per game.
Cody Zeller PF, C CHA-40% Ownership: Centers have been hard to find on the waiver wire this year and even with teams such as the Sixers and Rockets, back up Centers have not been able to take advantage of the extra playing time. Zeller has been hanging on to his minutes because Willy Hernangomez plays horrible defense and Bismack Biyombo doesn’t make an impact offensively. While Zeller has been up and down with his scoring over the last few games, his defense brings up his overall value. Zeller has blocked shots in his last four games and he’s grabbed steals in three of those games. He’s recorded two double-doubles in his last three games and he’s grabbed over seven boards per game this season. Zeller has been surprisingly helpful with assists in his last couple of games. He’s dished 15 assists combined in his last 2 games. He’s getting the ball in the high post and is turning his head to look for the cutter more.
Jordan Clarkson G UT-31% Ownership: Clarkson is mainly a one-category producer, but he’s been getting rave reviews from the Jazz Coaches and he’ll continue to be a regular part of the Jazz rotation. He focuses on changing the pace of the offense and scoring. He’ll even pull up on the break and take a spot-up three-pointer. His main competition for minutes and shots will be Joe Ingles and Royce O’Neale. Mike Conley makes the Jazz offense run worse and hopefully the Coaches realize that and give him fewer shots thus opening up more shots for Clarkson. Clarkson has scored 12 or more points in his last 3 games. He’s taken 11.8 shots per game this season. He’ll provide minimal help with assists and rebounds, but he continues to get fed at least 20 minutes per game. He’s played 29-plus minutes in 2 of his last 3 games. Even with Conley active and starting, Clarkson has been able to hang in the rotation. Clarkson has grabbed steals in two of his last three games.
Jakob Poeltl C SAS-18% Ownership: Poeltl was able to flex his muscles a bit more when LaMarcus Aldridge was out of the lineup. The Spurs lack depth inside as their only other player to really help out in the post besides Aldridge and Poeltl is Trey Lyles . Poeltl has scored in double figures in three of his last four games. When Aldridge returned to the court on Saturday, Poeltl was able to make the most of his minutes and scored 17 points in 18 minutes. He’s recorded blocks in his last 10 games and should be looked at as a volume producer. Poeltl has “short-term solution” written all over him at this point. Ride the wave with him, but the wave is getting smaller and if he stops scoring, look for other options. He’s grabbed seven or more rebounds in his last four games. He’s hanging on for dear life when it comes to his fantasy value. He plays decent defense, and will get fed more when Aldridge is playing more at the arc.
Kevin Porter Jr. SG CLE-6% Ownership: The Jordan Clarkson trade opened up more shots for Darius Garland and Kevin Porter Jr. Porter has scored at least 13 points in his last 3 games and he hit multiple three-pointers in all 3 contests. Porter will help lead the Cavs second unit in scoring. He’s grabbed steals in three of his last four games and he’s grabbed over three boards per game this season. Porter won’t rely solely on his long-range game, as he’ll look to attack the lane when it’s open. The Cavs may look to trade a veteran or two prior to the trade deadline and that could open up even more shots for the Cavs reserves. He’ll play more off the ball but he’ll get some time to work the elbow and the Cavs want him to continue to get more reps as he’s a building block for their future. He’s played 22 minutes per game this season.
WILD CARD PICK UP: J.J. Barea G DAL-2% Ownership: What a difference a day makes! The Mavs are another team that won’t force players to play if they have a history with injuries. Even with Doncic out, they held out Kristaps Porzingis and even after posting two strong games, they held out Barea. Barea may not pan out in the rotation while Doncic is out but we have to at least give him a shot because of how big the Doncic injury is. It opens up a ton of shots and Barea has scored 11 or more points in his last 2 games. He even dished seven-plus assists during those two games. Barea will sacrifice his body to keep plays alive and he won’t settle for long-range shots. He’ll try attacking the lane first and drawing contact. If Curry needs to miss a game or two, Barea will benefit by playing more minutes. As discouraging as it was seeing him held out on Saturday, Barea could see life in the rotation over the next few weeks.
