There are nine games today, two of which are nationally televised on NBATV today. With it being a Friday, it’s best to go to the deep fryer and serve up a delicious betting sampler.

Wizards vs. Pelicans Prediction: Washington Money Line (+220 on Bet365) *Bet of the Night

Sometimes you catch a big fish that you had no intentions or hopes of even finding. That is the case with today’s bet of the night. The New Orleans Pelicans are having a terrible season, in fact one of the worst in their franchise's history…. And that is saying something. 

The Pelicans are already looking to next year, but like an old Nintendo, the reset button is jammed. The front office is staring at a screen as the colors cycle through. Today those colors are red, white, and blue, because the Washington Wizards are coming to the Smoothie King Center.

As awful as the Pelicans have been, they have lost 11 games in a row and are in last place of the NBA, they are somehow -265 on the money line and -7-point favorites! Yeah, go ahead and read that again, I had to step away from the computer and look at the odds on my phone just to make sure I was actually awake. The team with the fewest wins in the NBA is -7 point favorites, if you aren’t laughing after reading that again…. You should be.

Granted this is a battle between the two worst teams in the NBA, but the Wizards can stick their chest out and walk with their head held high compared to the Pelicans. They have six wins. This is simply not adding up.

Is the western conference so much more superior to the eastern that the worst team is 7 point favorites? Perhaps. Maybe it’s because rookie Bilal Coulibaly is out, and the sportsbooks are concerned about replacing his 12.8 points per game. Or perhaps it is because third string center Marvin Bagley is out.

More than likely this is an off algorithm in their projection models and the humans that are supposed to check the final odds, let this one slip by. Either way we are taking advantage, and if you prefer to play it safe with spread do so. This pick is putting a unit on the money line of the Wizards with +220 odds against the worst team in the Association. Don’t overthink it.

 

 

 

NBA Parlay Prediction: Cavaliers ML + Nuggets ML (-118 on Bet365)

This bet is a twist on the Texas twostep. That is to say, we have two teams from Texas getting stepped on. The Cleveland Cavaliers continue their road trip, this time at the American Airlines Center to play the Dallas Mavericks. Meanwhile, the Denver Nuggets host the San Antonio Spurs at Ball Arena.

Cleveland and Dallas tip off first, with an 8:30 PM ET scheduled time. This column hammered the Cavaliers spread twice during their current road trip, and they have successfully taken down three NBA champions of this decade. Now they can take down their fourth Western Conference champion of the 2020s, and complete the sweep on this impressive stretch. 

They have also won eight games in a row and are currently -7 point favorites. They should cover the spread but in a parlay the key factor is safely winning. Look for them to win at Dallas today. Meanwhile the other big D, is hosting a surging San Antonio Spurs team. San Antonio have won six of their last ten games, but run into a hotter Nuggets team tonight.

Denver has won seven of their last ten games, have won three in a row, and are 10-5 at home this season. There are several questionable players today, but Nikola Jokic is not one of them. In fact he was able to sit out the entire fourth quarter in their last game and should be well rested. 

He alone can carry a team to victory, and the numbers indicate it with an all-time, historic plus/minus differential. Put a unit on the better teams to take care of business and win games in which they are seven-point favorites.

 

 

 

NBA Player Props & Other Picks Today, 1/3

There are more straight bets that are really enticing today, most notably the Houston Rockets’ money line.

Magic vs. Raptors Prediction: Scottie Barnes Over 17.5 Points (-125 on DraftKings)

The spread and money line are extremely tight on this match, which is also a top tier team versus a bottom team. The Orlando Magic are fourth in the Eastern Conference, and the Toronto Raptors are thirteenth.

However the Magic are banged up, with several players out, and three listed as day-to-day. They have lost six of their last ten games and are trying to hold on until their starters come back. That is another reason a player proposition is recommended, and Scottie Barnes has a set line of 17.5.

He has 19 or more points in four of his last five games and has played 31 or minutes in every game since returning from injury. As great a defense as Orlando has, they seem to be waving the white flag before this match even begins.

For Toronto to win their second game in a row, they will need points from their best player. The Raptors broke a double-digit losing streak in their most recent match, and did so with Barnes scoring 33 points. He has 18 or more field goal attempts in his last four of five games, and is averaging 20.4 points per game. Put a unit on him to score eighteen or more points tonight against an injured Orlando Magic team.
