Vegas baby!! For the second time this season, and first since March, the Cup series is racing in Sin City at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. This time it’s in the playoffs for the opening race of the Round of 12 and the winner clinches a spot in the Round of 8, just one round shy of the championship.
This is a 1.5-mile track that was redesigned several years ago to make it steeper track than it originally was and now the turns are banked at 20 degrees with the straights at nine degrees of banking at a minimum. The new redesign though and lack of tire wear for the most part, has made track position very important at this intermediate track. However, in the last four races overall at this track out of the 20 spots in the top-five finishing spots, 12 of the drivers finishing in those spots started P10 or worse especially in the Spring race this year as late wrecks played a big role. Typically though, this isn’t a very caution-filled race, but keep your eyes out for them this week as this is the only “predictable” race in the Round of 12 as Talladega and the Roval follow the next two weeks.
Strategy Notes
If you’re one to take previous manufacturer success into account, you’ll notice that Ford has won 60-percent of the last 10 races here and four of the last five, with Penske winning three of the last four. The stats of the most import this week are average finish position and PD along with Top-15 rate and average driver rating. Drivers that finish highly and stay in the top-15 for a long time are the ones to focus on this week given how tough track position can be to come by here. Position differential is always important but this week in the last three races there have been a total of 29 drivers to post double-digit PD marks for nearly 10 a race.

Core Drivers By Tier
Tier 1 - Joey Logano
Logano has won twice in the last three races here including earlier this year
He averages the most laps led per race over the last four races and highest top-15 rate
His 123.5 average driver rating is also the best in the field and with him starting a bit further back, he has PD upside
Tier 2 - Ryan Blaney
Blaney has a 10.8 average finish in the last four races and is the only driver in this tier with two top-fives in that span.
His 94.2 average driver rating in the last four races is fifth-best in the field in that span
In the 11 1.5-mile races in 2020, Blaney has the fifth-best average finish and third-best average rating and ranks third with a combined 46.8 laps led and fast laps a race
Tier 3 - Alex Bowman
Bowman is hot right now with three top-10s in the last five races this season and the third-best average finish in that span at 8.6
At Vegas, Bowman has three top-15s in the last four races and leads the field in quality passes with 74 per race.
He is also $1,400 cheaper on DK than he was in March
Contrarian Play - Matt DiBenedetto
DiBenedetto has typically been avoided at intermediate tracks but not this year
The 21-car has been good at this distance this year ranking 14th in average finish over 11 races with three top-10s and six top-15s.
In March he started P19 and finished P2 and he’s starting P19 again on Sunday
Fade - Denny Hamlin
Vegas has not been a fun place for Hamlin in the last several trips. His average finish is 18.5
Three top-10s in the last eight races with a 15.1 average finish doesn’t look much better
He started P4 and finished P17 in March and that was before the distraction of starting his own joint-venture racing team with Michael Jordan.
