Are we all recovered from the Clash last weekend and that crash fest that it turned into? Well, don’t get too comfortable as we’ve got the Daytona 500 this Sunday to kick off the start of the regular season for the Cup series. It might not be quite as big a crash fest as the Clash typically is, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be crash-free either.
Daytona International Speedway is a 2.5-mile long Tri-Oval track that has some of the steepest banking all the way around of any track on the Cup schedule with the turns banked at 31 degrees and the frontstretch or the Tri-Oval as it’s known is tilted at 18 degrees as well. The steepness of the banking leads to incredibly fast speeds being run here with speeds reaching 204 mph in the middle of the pack during the Clash entering into Turn 1. That’s remarkably fast but now consider you have 39 of your closest competitors in a two-by-two pack 20 rows deep going around the track door-to-door and bumper-to-bumper without a blink of eye’s worth of time to correct a mistake. That’s how intense this racing is.
The reason this track, and Talladega, are known as Plate tracks is because up until last year, there were restrictor plates in the engines to reduce the horsepower and speeds the cars were pumping out to make them theoretically safer, though the consequence of that is that it has created pack racing as alluded to above and that means that wrecks are more prevalent with a near 26-percent DNF rate across the fields in the last eight Daytona 500s.
There will be a bit of a new look this year to the Track Breakdowns as the Last Four race tables have been broken down by tiers based on salary as well as the Momentum tables (when we get to that in the sixth race of the year). There will also be some new stats presented in the Last Four tables as well as the Last Eight Races as well and for a breakdown of what those stats show, check out the updated Track Data Legend for a full description of every stat in all of the tables.
