For the first time in 51 years, no that’s not a typo, the Cup cars are going racing on dirt, well if it ever dries up in Bristol they’ll be on dirt. They have decided to do this at The Last Great Colosseum by covering the concrete banked racing surface in dirt and letting the same Cup cars that race on Sundays, loose on the Tennessee red clay. There are a few adjustments to the car like the removal of the splitter and some extra filters in the engine as well as biased tires and ones with block treads. The racing will look different too in that there will be no live pit stops during the race and instead they will only be pitting under competition cautions and stage breaks to manage the tires and fuel and no spots will be gained or lost under those pits. Speaking of competition cautions, they have added two to the race to alleviate the concerns about tire wear and now the stages are 100-100-50 with comp cautions at laps 50 and 150.
This race is only going to be 250 laps which is half as many laps as a standard Bristol race but it’s still plenty of laps to help with dominator points in laps led and fastest laps. It’s also a race that seems to be setting up as a track position race as it didn’t appear that the track was widening to much more than 1.5-2 grooves as opposed to potentially three-wide like the regular concrete Bristol presents as. The lack of competitive pit stops and the lack of a Choose Rule this week will also limit some of the position differential upside some of the guys starting in the back of the pack may ordinarily have. Also, keep in mind that this is still a short track, and lapping the cars at the tail end of the pack will happen just like it does at Bristol under normal conditions which also restricts some of the PD upsides from guys really far back in the pack.
