Items of Note:
- There are drivers utilizing all three racing grooves right at the beginning of the session.
- Most drivers are staying toward the apron or middle of the track but a few of the championship drivers are up by the wall with just four minutes gone off the clock
- There are a few sets of drivers out in groups of two trying to see how the passing and runs work on this track.
- Kevin Harvick got in the wake behind Kyle Busch on entry to Turn 1 and had to get out of the throttle and chase the car up the track losing quite a bit of time to Busch.
- Kevin Harvick is very loose no matter where he puts the car on the track at the moment, 10 minutes into the session.
- When the JGR drivers tried to pass each other on the track they made it tough on each other to see how passing could work late in the race.
- Several drivers are complaining of being loose to start the session.
- A couple of drivers are having ride-height issues with the front of their car where the car bounces and hits on the splitter a couple of times per lap.
- Kevin Harvick’s car tightens up as it runs longer on the track.
- Alex Bowman says the car won’t turn quite as quick as he wants it to and then when he adds throttle in the center it tightens the car up worse.
- Ricky Stenhouse Jr says he is having trouble in Turns 3 & 4 and feels like the back of the car is going to snap around on corner exit.
- Jimmie Johnson likes the adjustments they made to his car before the second race run of the session but still wants some changes made to it.
- Denny Hamlin says he’s having trouble staying down on the white line of the bottom and he can wrap the bottom like he wants to.
- A lot of the Championship Four are taking notes on where Kyle Larson is driving on the track and what his grooves look like on longer runs.
- Halfway through practice, Harvick is happy with the adjustments made for the second race run.
- With 20 minutes left, Hamlin is first in 10-lap average for the session.
- Kyle Larson says he’s good running the seem in Turns 3 & 4 but when he gets up by the wall he gets onto the splitter too much
- Drivers are doing pit road speed tests later in the session, they will stop allowing those two minutes left in the session.
- Drivers are having to change their lines halfway through longer runs as the tires wear and they can’t run the same lines in both sets of corners.
- Martin Truex Jr is happy with his car and on his third set of sticker tires. They also found out that the second channel of their radios were being used by vendors and fan tours so they had to change that up so they have a working backup for the race
- There is a ton of chatter about what Larson is doing on the track by pretty much everyone’s spotters.
- Kyle Busch has the fastest single lap and best five-lap average but wants more long-run speed in the 18-car.
- While the sun is setting it’s very hard to run along the wall because corner entry is very hard to see the braking zone properly.
