MLB DFS Value Vault September 4: Gunnar Henderson Won't Be This Cheap Forever
Today’s slate is a bit of a mess. DraftKings is using the nine-game slate starting at 1:35 pm ET, FanDuel is using a ten-game slate starting at 12:10 pm ET (same slate as DK, but using the 12:10 game between the Rockies and Reds for some reason), and Yahoo is using a 13-game slate starting at 1:35 pm ET. We don’t have the greatest pitching value options on this slate, but there are plenty of options on offense, so it works out just fine. We have a few MLB weather concerns on this slate, so make sure to check the weather center leading up to first pitch. Lastly, don’t forget to check out MLB implied runs totals using our Vegas Odds link and to use our MLB DFS lineup generator. Let’s dive into our MLB DFS picks today!
Pitchers
Matt Manning, Tigers (DraftKings - $7300 / Yahoo - $32)
Manning is someone I am higher on than most and I loved what we were seeing, but then his last start happened and it was a complete disaster as he got pounded for 7 runs. This is a nice bounce back spot though as the Royals offense is below league average. Manning has flashed plenty of upside with starts scoring 25.6, 23.4, and 30.5 dk points within his last five starts.
Max Castillo, Royals (DraftKings - $5900 / Yahoo - $27)
On the flip side of Manning, we have a super cheap Castillo. He has most pitched in relief, but he does have a sharp 2.81 ERA and 0.94 WHIP across 25.2 innings with 23 Ks. He fired five innings in his most recent outing, so he should be stretched out enough for this start against Detroit. The Tigers have the worst offense in the league with the lowest scoring output and the 4th highest strikeout rate.
Hitters
Gunnar Henderson, Orioles (DraftKings - $3000 / FanDuel - $2600)
Henderson has come out of the gates and looked exactly like the top prospect that we all saw him as. He is 6-15 (.400) to begin his career with a home run, a steal, two doubles, and two runs scored. Today, he faces a pitcher in Martinez who has a 5.28 ERA and 1.35 WHIP this season, so Henderson should have no issue keeping the great start to his MLB career going today.
Bubba Thompson, Rangers (DraftKings - $2000 / FanDuel - $2800)
Thompson is the latest player that I feel like I am really pounding the drum on. I just don’t understand his pricing at all. He has scored 15, 12, and 11 DK points in his last three games, going 6-10 with two steals and three runs in that span. He is hitting .400 with five steals in his last 10 games and now has 10 steals and a .305 average through his first 26 games in the big leagues. Today he gets to face a bad pitcher in Winckowski, who has given up 12 runs in his last 7.2 innings pitched and has a 5.83 ERA on the year with a 1.56 WHIP.
Cody Thomas, Athletics (DraftKings - $2000 / FanDuel - $2000 / Yahoo - $7)
Thomas is off to a night start with Oakland and for his MLB career as he has gone 3-5 with a walk in his first two games. He only played a handful of games in the minors this year, so there’s not much to look at there, but he crushed in AAA last year, hitting .289 with 18 home runs and 20 doubles across 218 at-bats (59 games). Watkins is a bad pitcher with a 4.26 ERA and 1.32 WHIP, so there’s a good chance that Thomas can keep his hot start going today.
Other Potential Value Plays
Nick Pratto, Royals (DraftKings - $2300 / FanDuel - $2700 / Yahoo - $13)
Oswald Peraza, Yankees (DraftKings - $2000 / FanDuel - $2000 / Yahoo - $7)
Rafael Devers, Red Sox (Yahoo - $12)
Ketel Marte, Diamondbacks (Yahoo - $9)
