DFS Value Pitchers
Dakota Hudson (STL); (DraftKings - $5,700; FanDuel - $7,700; Yahoo - $34)
Hudson is coming off his best start of the season in which he went seven innings against the Padres to pick up the victory. The right-hander limited Sam Diego to just one run on four hits and one walk while striking out three. While it is built into the price, especially on DK, Hudson’s upside is limited based on the fact that he is only striking out 4.88 batters per nine innings. The problem continues as he is walking 4.18 batters per nine innings, but Hudson is a groundball pitcher who has found success; 55.6% this season after 65.4% last year. We can’t get too smitten by Hudson’s 2.96 ERA as his 4.57 FIP isn’t a fan of the walks, but that still translates to a quality start for him. With a 6.8% barrel rate and only an eight-degree launch angle, opposing hitters do have issues squaring the ball up against him so that does help.
Garrett Whitlock (BOS); (DraftKings - $6,900; FanDuel - $7,000; Yahoo - $31)
The Angels have been struggling as of late and Whitlock has two straight quality starts of six innings each in which he has allowed two earned runs in total. While 18 out Whitlock’s outs have come on the ground, it is a little concerning that he didn’t strike anyone out in his last start. Despite that, Whitlock is still striking out about a batter an inning so far this season while only walking 2.22 batters per nine innings and posting a 3.02 ERA (3.43 FIP). The fact that he is pitching deeper into the game is a plus here and I would expect the strikeouts to return. However, it will be interesting to see how things go for the Angels now that Joe Maddon has been fired.
DFS Value Hitters
Miguel Cabrera, 1B (DET); (DraftKings - $2,900; FanDuel - $2,600; Yahoo - $13)
Let’s ride on the BVP here as Cabrera is hitting .327 with two home runs for his career against José Quintana and the fact that it comes in 58 plate appearances should give us some more comfort. Another factor in our favor here is the fact that Cabrera has hits in five of his last six games and he is coming off a three-hit effort on Sunday. While he has just three home runs and 19 RBI in 46 games this season, Cabrera is hitting .301 and he’s in a plus spot tonight.
Adam Duvall, OF (ATL); (DraftKings - $3,000; FanDuel - $2,600; Yahoo - $10)
Cole Irvin is a different pitcher away from Oakland this season (5.09 ERA and five home runs compared to 1.61 ERA and zero home runs) so attacking him in Atlanta tonight is going to be a favorable approach. While he is batting a little further down in the order (eighth) Duvall can prove to be a cheap part of the stack while also providing us with the platoon advantage while chasing a home run. Granted it came in Colorado, but Duvall had two hits in each of his last two games as he looks to get on track after struggling to start the season. Duvall is hitting just .199 on the season while striking out 31.8% of the time with only three home runs, but he does have the ability to go deep at any time; and with a 25.5-degree launch angle, he certainly is trying.
Raimel Tapia, OF (TOR); (DraftKings - $2,400; FanDuel - $2,100; Yahoo - $7)
Another popular stack tonight is going to be Toronto against Brad Keller, and Tapia can fit nicely there. Over 26 at bats in his last 10 games, Tapia is hitting .308 with four RBI and this is a perfect situation to capitalize on as Toronto has an implied total of over five tonight. While he only has three stolen bases so far this season, Tapia is always a threat to run, and at this price we don’t need much from the outfielder either.
Danny Mendick, 2B/SS (CWS); (DraftKings - $2,900; FanDuel - $2,300; Yahoo - $8)
If you are going to face the Dodgers, Mitch White is the most attractive pitching matchup you can get, and Mendick is in a favorable situation batting leadoff for the White Sox. Mendick has two hits in four of his last six games, and hits in five of them, while scoring five runs and driving in three during that stretch. Through 17 games this season, Mendick is hitting .318, and while he has benefited from a .394 BABIP, we only care about the game in front of us tonight and it’s hard to argue with the infielder’s price.
