MLB DFS Value Vault August 27: Luke Voit And His Platoon Advantage
Tonight’s main slate features 11 games and the likes of Luis Castillo, Yu Darvish, and Brandon Woodruff toeing the rubber. Do you pay up for one of the top-tier aces or do you look to more value options for your MLB DFS lineups this evening? Well, if you want to do the latter, I have a trio of value arms that you could use to be able to afford whatever hitters or high-end options in your favorite MLB DFS stack you want! Picking the game’s best players and top-priced options is fun and all but uncovering that hidden gem that provides crazy ROI is the key to finishing in the green and winning some money on tonight’s main slate. I have plenty of value options today for you to consider, including underpriced pitchers, affordable players in top stacks, and one-off plays that should thrive. Be sure to check out our weather report and daily projections leading up to lineup lock to maximize your lineup’s potential. Here are my favorite value plays for the main slate on Saturday, August 27.
MLB DFS VALUE PITCHERS
Sonny Gray, MIN ($9,200 FD/$8,400 DK) - Unlike the two pitchers you’ll read about next, Gray is an arm that I’m confident enough to use as my lone arm on FanDuel, given his upside in today’s matchup. This San Francisco lineup is reeling, as they have the third-highest strikeout rate and second-worst batting average in Major League Baseball over the last two weeks against right-handed pitching. Gray has a 3.07 ERA and 28.3 percent strikeout rate when pitching at home this year, and over his last six starts, he’s 3-1 with a 1.93 ERA, 10.47 K/9. He’s an absolute steal on DraftKings today, whether it be as your SP1 or SP2.
Drew Smyly, CHC ($8,300 FD/$7,900 DK/$32 Yahoo) - Given that he’s a southpaw facing Milwaukee, I feel obliged to include Smyly in today’s Value Vault. Over the last two weeks, the Brewers have a 33.7 percent strikeout rate against southpaws, not to mention a .179 batting average, .270 OBP, and 75 wRC+. Over his last four starts, Smyly has a 1.13 ERA with an 8.63 K/9, and he’s been quite good for Chicago. My biggest knock on Smyly today is that I’m not overly confident his offense can get to Brandon Woodruff, so he doesn’t have as high of odds for a win as Sonny Gray and Domingo Germán have, and we all know how important that win is for DFS purposes.
Domingo Germán, NYY ($8,600 FD/$7,100 DK/$34 Yahoo) - Oakland may only be about league average in terms of strikeout rate against righties over the last two weeks, but they are hitting just .200 with a .600 OPS against righties during that span, which ranks fifth-worst in each category. After a rough opening start to his 2022 season, German has settled in quite nicely, posting a 2.84 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over his last six starts. His strikeout numbers are unimpressive, which caps his overall upside, but I love his chances for a win today, and I prefer him as a second starter on today’s slate.
MLB DFS VALUE HITTERS
William Contreras, ATL ($14 Yahoo) - You have to roster a catcher on Yahoo, and while Jordan Montgomery has been excellent since being traded to St. Louis, you have to consider Contreras this evening. The youngster has a .295 batting average and .860 OPS on the road this season, and he’s pounded southpaws, to the tune of a .329 batting average and .970 OPS. Contreras is hitting .312 in the month of August, but he’s hit safely in 12 of his last 13, posting a .339/.383/.500 slash line during that stretch.
Joey Meneses, WSH ($2,800 FD) - Luis Cessa has allowed a .294 batting average and .391 wOBA to right-handed hitters this season, and while Meneses has been better against southpaws, he’s no slouch against righties. He’s rocking a .292 average and .500 slugging percentage against right-handed pitching this season, and he’s hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games. During this 18-game span, he’s slashing .343/.370/.586 with a .411 wOBA, 165 wRC+, five home runs, eight RBI, and 12 runs scored. He is too cheap today on FanDuel.
Luke Voit, WSH ($2,600 FD/$3,400 DK/$14 Yahoo) - As mentioned with Meneses, you can get to Luis Cessa right right-handed hitters, and Voit is a guy that has enjoyed facing right-handers for his entire career, as seen by his career .265 average, .502 SLG, and .856 OPS versus righties. I’m betting on Voit to leave the yard today, and that’s a better bet to make on Voit when a righty is on the bump for the opposition.
Donovan Solano, CIN ($2,500 FD/$3,100 DK) - Solano’s overall upside is capped, given that he doesn’t do anything except hit for a good batting average. However, he’s seeing the ball incredibly well at the moment, and the Reds could get to Paolo Espino this evening. Can Solano give us a couple of base knocks with a run scored or an RBI? Sure! Espino has a 4.46 ERA at home this season, and right-handed hitters have a .274 average and .351 wOBA against him. Solano has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games, posting seven multi-hit games during that stretch, not to mention a .444 batting average. Again, the upside is capped, but he has averaged 10.2 fantasy points on FanDuel during this 11 game stretch.
Josh Donaldson, NYY ($2,700 FD/$15 Yahoo) - Donaldson is 0-for-2 against Adam Oller in his career, but whatever, that doesn’t mean anything to me. Oller has allowed a .304 batting average and .396 wOBA to right-handed hitters, and he has a monstrous 7.71 ERA pitching in his home park this season. Meanwhile, Donaldson has hit .276 on the road this season, and so far in this series, he’s hitting .571 with an .857 SLG and 335 wRC+.
Oswaldo Cabrera, NYY ($2,700 FD/$2,100 DK/$7 Yahoo) - Cabreras has largely underwhelmed since being promoted, I’ll give you that, but is he finally finding his footing? He has back-to-back three hit games, and hitting at the bottom of the order means that if he gets on base, he’ll have the likes of Aaron Judge shortly thereafter to bring him around. He’s hitting .538 over his last 14 plate appearances, and the Yankees should be a popular stack this evening. If you choose to stack the Bronx Bombers, Cabrera is an incredibly affordable price on DraftKings and Yahoo in particular.
