MLB DFS Value Vault August 10: Kris Bubic Pitching Well
As far as today’s MLB action goes, our Wednesday is split across the day with a nine (or eight) game MLB DFS main slate taking place in the evening. That still leaves us plenty of options to work with along with some ace pitchers taking the mound. Staying on top of the latest MLB weather, MLB news, and MLB lineups is vital tonight as we work to build winning lineups and search for some MLB DFS value picks.
DFS Value Pitchers
Kris Bubic (KC); DraftKings - $5,500; Yahoo - $32
Bubic is never going to be confused with an ace, but the left-hander has been pretty good as of late with four straight starts of between 16 and 20 DK points. He is pitching deep into games with 26 innings over that stretch (two games of seven innings each and two with six innings each) while allowing a total of seven earned runs and striking out 20. The confusing thing is that Bubic’s price on DK has actually decreased by $900 over his last two starts which makes him a viable option for me tonight against a White Sox team that has been struggling and will be without Tim Anderson. After a horrific start to the year, Bubic had a 4.62 ERA in June followed by a 3.28 mark in July.
Mitch Keller (PIT); DraftKings - $6,600; FanDuel - $8,500; Yahoo - $33
Don’t look now but Keller is in the midst of a streak in which he has pitched at least six innings in each of his last six games. In three of those six games, Keller has gotten double digit outs on the ground (in a fourth game he had nine) to bring his groundball rate on the season to 50.4%. Keller has a solid 4.21 ERA this season (3.91 FIP) along with 7.40 strikeouts per nine innings and the Diamondbacks are one of the better landing spots for pitchers to face. Opposing hitters have a launch angle of just 7.7 degrees against Keller which helps to limit the damage.
DFS Value Hitters
Bryan De La Cruz, OF (MIA); DraftKings - $2,000; FanDuel - $2,100; Yahoo - $7
De La Cruz has found himself batting cleanup for the shorthanded Marlins these days, and Noah Syndergaard did not exactly get off to the best of starts in his career with the Phillies. If Miami does damage against the right-hander, their cleanup hitter will be in the middle of things. While it may be a risk as De La Cruz was batting just .212 entering action on Tuesday, he does have seven home runs and 21 RBI so there is some potential upside here and the outfielder does make some loud contact with a 9.9%-barrel rate and 45% hard hit rate.
Terrin Vavra, SS/OF (BAL); DraftKings - $2,000; FanDuel - $2,200; Yahoo - $12
Vavra got the call to Baltimore after hitting .324 in 45 games at Triple-A this season with 34 runs scored and 18 RBI. In the first 28 plate appearances of his major league career, Vavra has kept the success going batting .364 with four runs scored and four RBI after driving in two last night. The shortstop has been all over the Orioles’ lineup to this point, and he is essentially free tonight against a pitcher in José Berríos who has not been especially dominant this season.
Max Muncy, 2B/3B (LAD); DraftKings - $4,500; FanDuel - $2,700; Yahoo - $14
Muncy took a modest five game hitting streak into action on Tuesday, but based on how his season has gone to this point, it is worth recognizing. The infielder was still batting just .174 on the season but through 88 games he has shown some pop with 11 home runs and 37 RBI. Muncy also benefits from the strong, and deep Dodgers’ lineup and he works his way back into full health. With a 14.5%-barrel rate, it is hard to argue with the type of contact Muncy is making so far this season and his career best 21.2-degree average launch angle puts him in position to go deep.
Steven Kwan, OF (CLE); DraftKings - $4,400; FanDuel - $2,700; Yahoo - $16
Kwan is not going to jump off the page with potential, but it is a favorable matchup against Drew Hutchison and his 4.37 ERA (5.35 xERA). Hutchison walks almost as many batters as he strikes out (4.37 vs. 5.66 per nine innings) and I would expect him to be in trouble tonight against Cleveland. With a .297 batting average and .371 on base percentage, Kwan does a great job of getting on base while also scoring 53 runs and stealing nine bases.
