MLB DFS Value Vault April 19: Christian Yelich Looks to Build Off Grand Performance
Published: Apr 19, 2022
That game at Colorado tonight is going to cost you a pretty penny, so you are going to need some value plays to fill out your MLB DFS lineups for today, Tuesday, April 19th. There are a lot of good matchups worth exploiting tonight, some of which are cheaper options in what should end up being some of the day’s most popular MLB DFS stacks. In today’s Value Vault, you will find two mid-priced starters, as well as some of the game’s biggest stars and even a top prospect that doesn’t break the bank. You can comfortably fit these players in your lineups, en route to a profitable Tuesday night. Here are my favorite MLB DFS picks for today’s slate on FanDuel, DraftKings, and Yahoo Fantasy.
Pitchers
$6,900 FanDuel/$32 Yahoo
Yahoo I loathe Jon Gray’s price point on DraftKings, but sign me up on FanDuel and Yahoo! Gray was solid in his debut with the Rangers, and despite the final stat line not being quite indicative of his performance (3 ER in 4 IP), he should be good to go following a quick injured list stint due to a blister. Seattle is no better than league average against righties, and there is plenty of swing-and-miss potential in that lineup. Gray’s slider induced seven whiffs on 13 swings in his debut, and that pitch could shine in this matchup. Gray got up to 70 pitches in his season debut, so he should be good for a full workload, or very close to it (85-90 pitches).
$6,300 DraftKings
Cole Irvin hasn’t exactly set the world on fire through his first two starts of the year, and the four home runs through said starts are a bit worrisome. However, Baltimore is hitting just .215 against southpaws, not to mention a league-worst 33.1 percent strikeout rate. Did you see what Nestor Cortes did to this team!? The Orioles have a putrid .077 ISO against lefties, and when you combine Baltimore’s lack of juice thus far against lefties and their propensity to strike out, there’s a path for Irvin at just $6,300 to be a sneaky good second starter on DraftKings.
Hitters
$2,900 FanDuel/$14 Yahoo
FanDuel, also known as “FreeDuel” to Jon Impemba and James Grande in the Quick Pitch MLB DFS Podcast, continues to give us the goods! This price point is excellent for Yelich, and the upside is immense today. He’s 2-for-7 with a home run in his career against JT Brubaker and dating back to 2021, left-handed hitters have a .271 batting average, .355 wOBA, and .494 slugging percentage against Brubaker. The Pittsburgh right-hander has allowed four earned runs in each of his first two starts, and he allowed a 6.78 ERA on the road in 2021. Fire up Yelich and other Milwaukee bats, especially lefties, as you wish.
$3,100 FanDuel/$12 Yahoo
Kansas City’s Carlos Hernández has reverse splits, meaning you want righties against him. In 2021, righties posted a .310 wOBA against him and hit 70 points higher in terms of batting average compared to lefties. Here in 2022, he’s allowed a .471 wOBA to right-handed hitters, and he allowed four earned runs on six hits in just 4.1 innings in his first start this year. Carlos Correa has struggled this year, sure, but he had two hits last night, and this price point is very affordable for a player of Correa’s caliber. Correa is 2-for-3 with a home run in his career against Hernandez, and dating back to 2018, he’s hit safely in six of his last seven games at Kauffman Stadium with five multi-hit efforts in that span.
$2,900 DraftKings/$2,800 Fanduel/$9 Yahoo
All of his hits this year have come against right-handers this season, and three of his five hits have gone for extra bases. I’m not sure I can trust Witt Jr. in cash, but I don’t mind tagging him on the flip side of a Minnesota stack against Carlos Hernández. Archer looked solid in his debut with the Twins, but dating back to 2019, Archer has been prone to right-handed hitters, as they have posted a .342 wOBA and .813 OPS. Witt Jr. has hit safely in two of his last three contests, but again, I’m not confident in him for cash games.
$15 Yahoo
Yes, he has just one hit in his last 24 at-bats, but he has walked five times, so he’s finding a way on base at least. Patrick Sandoval isn’t a left-handed hitter’s best friend, but Kyle Tucker is 4-for-6 with two home runs against Sandoval in his career. Most of his batted ball metrics, i.e. average exit velocity and barrel rate, are right in line with last year’s numbers, and his xBA of .304 and .077 BABIP indicate luck just hasn’t been on his side thus far in 2022. Tonight could be where it all changes, as he has Sandoval’s number.
$3,600 DraftKings/$13 Yahoo
I’m not considering Aaron Nola on FanDuel, because why play a catcher when you don’t have to, right? I mean, this is coming from someone who caught their entire life on the diamond! Nola is hitting .265 to start the year and he has locked himself in at the top of the San Diego order. Nola killed lefties last season, and Cincinnati’s Reiver Sanmartin has served up four hits and four walks to right-handers through two appearances this year. If you look back at 2021, righties hit .346 against him. I really like the San Diego right-handed bats, and you can use Nola at the dedicated catcher spot on DraftKings and Yahoo at a very fair price tonight.
