Drew Rom, Cincinnati Reds - HIGHER than 5.5 Hits Allowed

Rom has his hands full today, and even that may be sugarcoating it a bit. Mathematically speaking, the Reds are still alive, and they need to win out. They get a matchup against left-hander Drew Rom, who has allowed 44 hits across 29.1 innings pitched this year, not to mention 17 hits over his last 6.2 innings of work! He’s allowed six or more in four of his seven starts this season, and I expect him to struggle against a Cincy lineup that figures to be right-handed heavy. Rom has served up a .339/.400/.571 line to right-handed pitching this season, and his two starts at home have been far from encouraging this season. Over the last two weeks, the Reds are hitting .306 against southpaws, which is the fourth-best mark in baseball, while also posting a .510 SLG, .204 ISO, and 129 wRC+ during this stretch. Even though they just scored 19 last night, the hopes of a postseason berth should keep this offense engaged, and there should still be some hits left in the tank against the very hittable Rom.

Quinn Priester, Pittsburgh Pirates - LOWER than 4.0 Strikeouts

With a retooling of his arsenal, Priester has had some better results of late, but the strikeouts just haven’t been there for him. Outside of striking out seven Phillies back at the end of July, Priester has not logged more than four strikeouts in any appearances this season. Left-handed hitters have given him fits this year, to the tune of a .322 batting average against, and Priester has a miniscule 11.3 percent strikeout rate versus lefties this year. He’s been better against righties, I’ll give him that, but the Marlins control their destiny for the playoffs, and a win today would allow them to clinch. They are fighting hard to get into the postseason, and over the last two weeks against right-handed pitching, no team has a better batting average (.303), on-base percentage (.392), OPS (.875), wOBA (.377), or wRC+ (138) than the Miami Marlins. They are only striking out 20.8 percent against righties during this stretch, while posting a massive 12 percent walk rate! Since dropping the usage on his curveball, Priester has only a 24.5 O-Swing% and 8.7 SwStr% over his last two starts. I don’t expect many strikeouts from Priester today.
