MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks May 23

Marcus Semien, Texas Rangers – OVER 0.5 Singles & OVER 1.5 Total Bases

We all know Marcus Semien is good, but the Texas Rangers' second baseman is on fire at the plate right now. Semien is hitting .387 (12-for-31) over the past seven games and .344 (22-for-64) over the past 15 games. He brings a current 12-game hitting streak into tonight’s contest and he’s also hit safely in 18 of his last 19 games spanning the month of May. When looking at the singles and total bases trends, here’s how it shakes out. Semien has knocked 12 singles out of his last 18 hits (67%) and 38 of his 58 total hits this season (66%) have been singles. He also has multiple total bases in four of the past seven games. Semien’s opposing pitcher tonight is Pittsburgh Pirates starter Rich Hill, who has a 3.80 ERA this year but could run into trouble against a Rangers lineup that’s been crushing left-handers. Hill is due for negative regression, too, as his poor 5.88 xERA and high 4.62 FIP indicate. He also has poor home splits with a 5.25 ERA in Pittsburgh this season. The only worry is that Semien is just 2-for-12 in his career vs. Hill, but we’ll look the other way on that stat for now.

Bryan De La Cruz, Miami Marlins – OVER 1.5 Total Bases 

After going 4-for-4 at the plate last night, Bryan De La Cruz is now hitting .407 (11-for-27) over the past seven games and .393 (22-for-56) over the past 15 games. Simply put, the Miami Marlins outfielder is mashing right now and we should ride the hot bat while we can. De La Cruz has over 1.5 total bases in eight of his past 10 games, including three homers and five doubles in this span. The Marlins are in Coors Field again tonight and get a favorable matchup against Austin Gomber. The Colorado Rockies’ left-hander has a 6.70 ERA and 1.63 WHIP this season and gave up eight runs in his past two starts combined (both at home). Meanwhile, De La Cruz is crushing left-handed pitching this season to the tune of a .344 BA. Look for him to stay hot and go over 1.5 total bases in this spot. 

Christian Vazquez, Minnesota Twins – OVER 0.5 Singles

Sometimes looking at MLB BvP numbers can be misleading one way or the other when trying to match up MLB player props. Other times, we get a stat or trend that is way too juicy to ignore despite some underlying concerns. That brings us to Christian Vazquez. The Minnesota Twins catcher is hitting a whopping .632 (12-for-19) against Alex Cobb across their careers. That sample size is just big enough to expect Vazquez to have success at the plate tonight. Yes, Cobb has an outstanding 1.94 ERA thus far for the San Francisco Giants, but a 3.98 xERA and 3.15 FIP mean some shaky outings might be coming. Of course, the big concern is that we’re backing a subpar hitter like Vazquez, who’s batting just .229 on the season. The silver lining for this singles prop is that Vazquez is a singles hitter and we only need one knock to squeak through. Of his 12 hits against Cobb, 11 have been singles. Of Vazquez’s 24 hits this season, 21 have been singles.
