Jesus Luzardo, Miami Marlins – UNDER 5.5 Strikeouts

At first glance, this strikeout prop for Jesus Luzardo may seem low. The Miami Marlins starter has gone over 5.5 strikeouts in 10 of 16 starts and owns a solid 10.2 K/9 rate this season. When you look closer, though, the under is the play in a tough matchup against the Boston Red Sox. Against left-handed pitching, the Red Sox have a low 20.4% K rate (6th-best in MLB) and a high 10.6% walk rate (4th-best) this year. Since the start of June, Boston’s K rate vs lefties is down to 16.2% with the walk rate at 11.2% (both 2nd-best in the majors). This lineup is simply tough on southpaws and should make Luzardo work. Plus, the Red Sox boast a top-tier offense at home with a .357 wOBA, 18.8% strikeout rate, and a .289 batting average this season. As for Luzardo, he has a 5.45 ERA on the road compared to a 2.65 ERA at home. The Marlins’ left-hander has also gone under 5.5 K’s in three of his last five road starts while averaging 5.6 strikeouts per road outing. We’ll bank on him being below that average in this matchup. 

Ezequiel Tovar, Colorado Rockies – OVER 1.5 Total Bases 

Since he plays for the bottom-dwelling Colorado Rockies and isn’t a well-known name, Ezequiel Tovar might be flying under the radar regarding MLB props. Tovar, though, is scorching hot at the plate with a .357 BA over the past seven games while riding an 11-game hitting streak. Despite missing a few games last week while on the paternity list, Tovar hasn’t missed a beat with multiple total bases in four of five games since returning. He’s also hit safely in 20 of 22 games during the month of June with a .318 BA in this span. The Rockies have Tovar batting second in the lineup now as one of their better hitters. Tonight’s matchup is against Los Angeles Dodgers rookie starter Emmet Sheehan. He’s been solid over his first two MLB starts, but a 5.27 FIP is worrisome for the young righty – especially with an outing in Coors Field on tap here. Tovar, meanwhile, is hitting .288 at home and .280 vs right-handed pitchers this season. Grab the over on his 1.5 total bases prop.
