MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks August 25
Framber Valdez, Houston Astros – HIGHER than 2.5 Earned Runs
Despite starting the season out strong, Framber Valdez has been a profitable pitcher to fade lately. The Houston Astros left-hander has a 6.18 ERA and 5.28 FIP over seven starts since the All-Star break – and that’s with his no-hitter factored in. He’s allowed at least four earned runs in six of those last seven outings, including three straight coming into tonight. Valdez also has some worrisome road numbers this season and recently. He has a 4.43 ERA and 4.59 FIP on the road, which are night and day compared to his 2.91 ERA and 2.72 FIP at home. Valdez has coughed up at least three earned runs in six straight road starts. Tonight he’ll face the Detroit Tigers, who don’t usually pose a threat. Over the past week, though, the Tigers are hitting lefties well with a .275 average, .356 wOBA, and 137 wRC+ in the split. The offense has been tougher than you’d think lately, averaging 4.9 runs per game over the past eight contests. There’s value in Valdez to allow 3+ earned runs on the road again here.
Brandon Woodruff, Milwaukee Brewers – LOWER than 4.5 Hits Allowed
Since returning to the Milwaukee Brewers rotation in early August, Brandon Woodruff has produced a mixed bag of results. He allowed four runs last outing but tossed a quality start in his previous game. One thing has been true, throughout, though. Woodruff isn’t allowing a ton of hits. In fact, he’s allowed fewer than five hits in all five starts this season. It’s especially encouraging to see him limiting the hits over his last three starts since coming back from injury. The Brewers right-hander is also rocking a .182 batting average against. Let’s look for Woodruff to keep it going tonight at home in a good spot against an inconsistent offense. The San Diego Padres have just a .176 batting average and .282 wOBA over the past week vs right-handed pitching. It hasn’t been much better overall in the month of August as the Padres have a .228 BA and .305 wOBA against righties in this span.
