MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks April 25
Nestor Cortes, New York Yankees – OVER 6.0 Strikeouts
We were successful yesterday fading an offense with a high strikeout rate against left-handed pitching, so let’s do it again tonight. It was the Brewers last night, but we’re looking at the Minnesota Twins for Tuesday against the lefty Nestor Cortes. The Twins have a 27.9% K rate against left-handed pitchers this season, the fourth-highest mark in the MLB. They also have just a .278 wOBA, 6.1% walk rate, .203 batting average, and .624 OPS as a team against southpaws in 2023 – all in the bottom four of the league. Those numbers have been just as bad, and actually slightly worse, over the past week vs. lefties. Enter Nestor Cortes, who has a solid 3.09 ERA over four outings so far and a 22:4 K:BB ratio across 23.1 innings. He’s punched out seven in back-to-back starts coming into tonight – including against this same Twins lineup not too long ago. Plus, the weather is pitcher-friendly in Minnesota with colder temperatures in the 40s and wind blowing in.
Jorge Mateo, Baltimore Orioles – OVER 0.5 Singles
Although he doesn’t technically qualify for the batting title, Jorge Mateo’s .358 average is the sixth-highest mark in the MLB this season. The guy has been a hit machine whenever he’s been in the Orioles lineup, which is most days at this point. Check to make sure he’s starting for Baltimore tonight with a righty on the mound, but it’s hard to see Mateo sitting with how hot his bat is right now. The O’s shortstop is hitting .500 over the past seven games (9-for-18) and gets a favorable matchup here. Boston Red Sox starter Corey Kluber has struggled to an 8.50 ERA through four starts this season and he just gave up seven runs and six hits to Minnesota last time out. Kluber faced the Orioles in his first start of the year and coughed up five runs on six hits. Mateo went 2-for-3 that day to give him a career .357 BA (5-for-14) against Kluber. As for this singles prop, 11 of Mateo’s 19 hits this year have been singles. Hitting at the back end of the Baltimore lineup isn’t ideal, but we’re still riding this hot bat tonight.
