Another week means another opportunity to sit in judgment of Jeff Mans! I have poured over Jeff’s rankings and opinions and well, let us see how he did. Oh, and as usual, I will pepper this piece with a few of my own masterpieces and pieces of [use a word for dung] from the past week.
Here is the 2015 Week 6 edition of Right, Wrong or Indifferent:
RIGHT
Colin Kaepernick: Maestro Mans was dead on when he penned: “I understand that nobody wants to play Kaepernick right now but the Ravens are just so brutal defensively that it makes a lot of sense. Baltimore has given up the second-most fantasy points to QBs, including two rushing TDs. He is a GPP-only play as Kaep is too risky to be put in your cash game lineups.” A stat line of 340 passing yards, two TD and 10 rushing yards says that if you followed Jeff’s advice, you got a solid bargain. For those in season-long leagues, there will be bye weeks (or injuries) that make Kaep a sneaky start worth considering.
Brandon Marshall: Mr. Mans was spot on regarding the Jets wideout. Jeff wrote: “The Redskins don't have any defensive backs that can compete physically with Marshall. With Chris Culliver out, Will Blackmon draws Marshall in coverage and he is in for a long ride. Marshall has three consecutive games of over 100 yards and hasn't had less than nine targets or six catches yet this year.” Well, Marshall proved Jeff’s genius going 7-111 and a TD. Watch the film, Marshall is playing great football and getting better as the season goes on. Buy if you have any chance to roster this monster from gang green.
Carson Palmer: Jeff is looking good here as he wrote about Palmer: “The only thing that has slowed Palmer's production this season is big leads that cause the Cardinals to take their foot off of the pass game gas pedal. The Steelers offense has been slowed but should score enough to keep the Cardinals hungry. The Steelers are thin in the secondary and grade out as the second-worst pass coverage defense according to PFF.” Carson’s one TD is not awesome but any time you roster or play a QB who throws for 421 yards, you have to give yourself (or in this case, Jeff) some credit. If he can stay healthy, Palmer will be on a lot of fantasy football title teams.
Lamar Miller: Ok, one for me (though Jeff was high on him too). I pushed everyone who asked or would listen to roster/start Lamar Miller. Yeah me! 118 total yards with a TD and two catches to boot is a very solid day. The fact that Miller averaged 5.9 yards per carry only further demonstrates how good he was on Sunday. The new brain trust in Miami knows they have to run the football and Miller will benefit. If there are doubters in your league, well, you know what to do! Fleece the fools!
WRONG
Eddie Lacy: Well, now for the other side of the coin. This Mans prediction hardly came to pass: “The Chargers grade out as the worst defense against the run according to PFF and have given up the third most fantasy points to RB's. Lacy is going to get going this week and he'll be my most-owned RB for sure.” Four carries for three yards and 17 more receiving yards is just putrid. Many a fantasy team and daily lineup ended up on the scrap heap thanks to the Packers RB. I cannot kill Jeff here as no one (and I mean NO ONE) could have seen this bad of a performance coming. The only explanation is that there is an injury about which no one is talking.
Charcandrick West: I think Jeff got Charcandrick West (Knile?) fever when he wrote “I like his DK price a lot more than FD but still a bargain considering his upside. The Chiefs' offense is centered around the RB and though Knile Davis will likely get short-yardage touches I strongly believe West will be the feature guy this Sunday. I set a floor of 10.62 points for him with a ceiling of 19.10 because of Davis' potential involvement.” 39 total yards, no TD and only one catch is just not getting it done and a stat line that fell below the predicted floor. I would not give up on West just yet but hopefully you do not need to start him any time soon.
Derek Carrier: Jeff booted this grounder when he said: “The Redskins have targeted the TE position the second most of all NFL teams so far this season. Carrier got into the end zone last week but his price is once again bottom of the barrel.” Four catches for 39 yards on four targets is not getting it done even at a low price. It looks like the Washington TE will be TD dependent. Plan accordingly.
Toby Gerhart: In all fairness, I have to look in the mirror and scold myself at least once. No, I did not think Gerhart would go off for 200 yards or anything like that. However, with Yeldon on the shelf and D-Rob hurting, I figured he would notch 50 yards rushing, 3-5 receptions and a goal line TD. [Yes, that is the sound of a buzzer you hear – Johnny, tell him about the consolation prizes]. Gerhart got the 50 yards total (actually 49) and the three receptions but without the TD, well, the value was just not there. Jacksonville can throw the ball, has weapons in the receiving game and has little reason to run a backup RB. #ShouldHaveKnownBetter.
INDIFFERENT
Andy Dalton: Jeff noted: “Dalton's price just won't go up despite his phenomenal start to the season. With weapons like A.J. Green, Marvin Jones, Tyler Eifert and Giovani Bernard there is no shortage of talent to help rack up Dalton's points.” Well, given that praise, I think just 243 yards, even with three TD is a wash on the prediction front. No matter, if you own Dalton, you do not care how I characterize the prediction. You are playing Dalton and enjoying every minute. Stay the course.
Kamar Aiken: Jeff was pretty high on Aiken: “My weekly advice of picking on 49ers CB Kenneth Acker who is absolutely awful at both coverage and tackling. Aiken has been very steady so far this season and without Steve Smith once again he will have a golden opportunity to pay off 3x his salary across the board this week.” Three catches for 22 yards is not getting it done but that late TD made it a wash. This performance does not inspire confidence.
Tyler Eifert: About the big Bengal TE, Jeff penned as follows: “It’s hard to ignore Eifert's production this season. He ranks first in TD, third in targets and fourth in both receptions and yards among TEs this season.” Like with Aiken, the late TD made this pick a wash. Eifert’s 4-30 is nothing to look at but that TD, that was nice. Indifferent!
Ok, let’s use what we learned and win in Week 7. Good luck!
