Check this out. Getting to pen “Right, Wrong or Indifferent: The Sit in Judgment of Jeff Mans Piece” was not only a one week assignment – I get to do this for 17 full weeks. Load, aim, fire, repeat! So, each week I will be going over Jeff’s rankings and opinions and well, telling it like it is. Of course, like last week, I will pepper this piece with a few of my own masterpieces and pieces of [use a word for dung] from the past week.
Here is the 2015 week 2 edition of Right, Wrong or Indifferent:
RIGHT
Terrance Williams: About Terrance Williams, Jeff wrote “Williams is going to be heavily owned because of price and in picking up targets with Dez being injured. If it weren't for such a great matchup and pace of play contest, I'd probably fade him but circumstances make it real hard to justify’” Well, it was hardly the shootout many expected but if you followed Jeff’s advice and started TWill at his nice price, it paid off. Williams delivered 4 catches for 84 yards and a TD (18 fantasy points). I know I am a Cowboys homer at times (OK, often) and I cannot cite stats to prove this but I see a chemistry between Weeden and T-Will that should deliver fantasy value at a low price – especially against the Falcons on Sunday.
Jordan Matthews: About Jordan Matthews, Jeff wrote: “Matthews is without question Bradford's preferred target in the passing game. With a very soft price and a high expected point total Matthews is an excellent play in week two.” Well the reasoning was off but garbage time counts! Even though he played an atrocious game in which he showcased stone hands, Matthews delivered fantasy production with 6 catches, 80 yards and a TD. I will take 20 fantasy points any day. That said, with a trip to Revis Island coming up this week and a QB with a confidence problem as his traveling buddy, I am going to let Matthews ride the bench in any league where I have a suitable substitute.
Vincent Jackson: About Vincent Jackson, Jeff wrote “Another great game script play here especially if Mike Evans is inactive or limited in this matchup. The Saints secondary is absolutely awful and without Keenan Lewis it is a field day for WR's.” I am giving this a win because while 3-54 and a TD is not spectacular, it is still a solid 14.4 in PPR – a good number from what is likely a WR3 on your team. I like VJax to be this guy all year. 4-5 catches, 50+ yards and 8 TD (i.e., a TD every other week). Guys like this – unspectacular but consistent (1,000+ yards in 6 of the last 7 seasons) – help win titles!
D’Angelo Williams: A quick attaboy for me -- I advocated to my twitter followers that they start D’Angelo Williams. Wow do I hope they listened! Williams was a monster with his 3 TD. Of course, he will be on the bench most of the time with L.Bell returning, so not a lot to do here with D-Will unless you need to handcuff Bell. That said, there is a lesson here. Watch for players on good offenses that play against road teams having to travel to play Sunday after a Monday night game. Human beings play football, recovery is tough week to week and it is just tougher when you have to travel on a short week.
WRONG
DeMarco Murray: Ok, enough praising Mr. Mans (though his key role in the amazing DFS Playbook Pro has earned him much praise but I digress). About DeMarco Murray, Jeff wrote “A narrative play indeed but a calculated one at that. Eagles have the highest expected scoring output, are the quickest pace of play team in the NFL and are playing Murray's former team. I really am pumped about his 5 targets in the passing game last week.” I cannot kill Jeff on this. Who could have seen the nightmare that has become Chipville? Wow, what a dumpster fire. You have all read the absurdly low stats for DeMarco so need to repeat them here (other than the fact that Eli Manning has nearly 3 times the rushing yards as DeMarco so far (yes Eli) and the noted speedster Brandon Weeden has as many rushing yards in his 3 carries this year as Murray has all year). Am I done having fun? No but I will get to the point. If you drafted Murray in yearlong, you have to hold him but do not get too close to the dumpster fire that is the Eagles. If you are playing DFS this week, stay far far away from Murray and the Iggles against Gang Green.
Drew Brees: In another mis-step, Jeff penned “Brees is by far the safest QB this week and I will be building most of my cash game lineups around him.” Well that was dead wrong as Brees put up just 255 and 1 TD. Of course, no one knew he would suffer an injury to his throwing arm. Not much to say here really. Watch the injury issues carefully and absent bargain basement prices, avoid all Saints not named Ingram unless Brees is healthy and ready to go next week.
Sam Bradford: About Sam Bradford, Jeff wrote “Real nice discount for a high volume, great paced offensive leader. This game features by far the highest expected total of the slate and thus Bradford is in line to far outpace his salary”. Again, in Jeff’s defense, who could have seen this? Give the Dallas D its due as Sean Lee was superman this week and the much maligned Brandon Carr and Mo Claiborne played much better than they get credit for. That said, Bradford looked so bad and so lost behind a line that blocked no one and could not even get the snap count correct that there is no way I touch any Eagle against Gang Green this weekend unless I have to.
Brandon Coleman: Ok, I need to take one on the chin here too. In a display of infinite wisdom, I advocated Coleman big time this week. 3 catches for 33 is just not getting it done. If Brees looks healthy, I can still get behind Coleman in standard leagues but other than that, leave him on the bench until the Saints (who only the Eagles can make look good) get their acts together.
INDIFFERENT
Justin Forsett: About Justin Forsett, Jeff wrote “The Raiders defense graded out poorly against the run last week and was the second worst again zone running in 2014. Forsett is a terrific pass catching option as well making this price drop too good to pass up.” For what it is worth, I agreed with Jeff. Well, we both get a “what-ever”. 80 yards and 4 catches for 12 points – he has to do better than that but if you played him cheap it was probably a wash.
Matt Forte: About Matt Forte, Mr. Mans penned “A high scoring affair in Chicago this week doesn't benefit anybody more than Matt Forte. He is the center of the Bears offense regardless of whether they are running or passing the ball justifying his large salary across the industry” Forte was fine but nothing to write home about. 105 yards and 4 receptions on the day for Forte is 14 fantasy points. This does not kill you but does not help. Look for him to catch a bunch of dump offs with Jay Cutler riding the pine in the next couple of weeks. Play in ppr, look for options in standard leagues.
Panthers DST: My turn. I passed on a variety of DST to start the Panthers against Houston without Foster and with Mallett under center. Oh well. One sack and one INT is hardly the production one seeks from their fantasy defense but doesn’t a fantasy defense warrant an “indifferent” title no matter what?
Good luck in Week 3
