2023 Fantasy Baseball MLB Injury Report Week 23
MLB Injury Updates Hitters
Yordan Alvarez, OF, Houston Astros (Knee)
Alvarez tweaked his knee while on the field in the Astros' previous game, but he was able to finish the contest. Houston plays again on Monday and we’ll have to see if he has any swelling or soreness prior to the start of their game against the Rangers.
Luis Robert Jr., OF, Chicago White Sox (Quad)
While his quad isn’t strained, Robert has sat out the White Sox last two games. Chicago plays on Monday and Robert isn’t in the lineup. We’ll have to see if he can return to the field for game two of the Royals series.
Alex Verdugo, OF, Boston Red Sox (Hamstring)
Verdugo had to leave the Red Sox last game because his hamstring started hurting him and Wilyer Abreu replaced him in the outfield for most of the second half of the game.
Ty France, 1B, Seattle Mariners (Elbow)
France got hit by a pitch over the weekend and sat out the Mariners last game. Seattle starts their series against the Reds on Monday and we’ll have to see if he can make it back in the mix for that contest.
Riley Greene, OF, Detroit Tigers (Elbow)
Greene hurt his elbow a few days ago in the field a few days ago and the Tigers put him on the injured list over the weekend because of the swelling. He’ll miss at least the next week of action.
Danny Jansen, C, Toronto Blue Jays (Finger)
Jansen could be out for the season after fracturing his finger on Friday. Besides Alejandro Kirk, Tyler Heineman will also help behind the plate in Toronto.
Tommy Pham, OF, Arizona Diamondbacks (Finger)
Pham has a sore finger and missed the Diamondbacks' last contest. It’s uncertain whether or not he’ll be able to play on Monday for the start of Arizona’s series against Kansas City.
Michael A. Taylor, OF, Minnesota Twins (Hamstring)
Taylor was placed on the injured list Sunday with a strained hamstring and we won’t see him back on the field until the middle of September.
MLB Injury Updates Pitchers
Nathan Eovaldi, SP, Texas Rangers (Forearm)
Eovaldi has been sidelined since the middle of July with an injured forearm but new reports are out that he is just about ready to return to the mound and we may see him pitch at some point in the next week.
Max Scherzer, SP, Texas Rangers (Forearm)
Scherzer has a sore forearm and the Rangers are watching him closely to see if the pain goes away over the next few days before deciding whether they need to keep him out for a few weeks. He is scheduled to start again in the next few days, but it isn’t 100 percent that he’ll make that start.
Graham Ashcraft, SP, Cincinnati Reds (Toe)
Ashcraft has a bad toe injury and the Reds put him on the injured list over the weekend. There’s a possibility he won’t pitch again in the 2023 MLB season.
Jason Adam, RP, Tampa Bay Rays (Oblique)
Adam is on the injured list with a strained oblique and we won’t see him help out in relief for at least the next two weeks of action. Adam has 12 saves for the season and has struck out 69 batters.
Daniel Bard, RP, Colorado Rockies (Forearm)
Bard has a sore forearm and the Rockies put him on the injured list on Sunday and he won’t pitch for at least the next two weeks.

Player News
Daulton Varsho picked up three hits, three RBI and a homer in a win over the Angels on Thursday.
Varsho has only played in seven games this year, but they’ve been seven good ones. He’s homered three times already, and his slugging percentage is a remarkable — and entirely unsustainable — .727 over 22 at-bats. Varsho has been a mediocre offensive player in his two seasons with the Blue Jays, but it’s possible at the age of 28 he’s having a breakout campaign. Far from a guarantee, but possible.
Taylor Ward hit a two-run homer in a loss to the Blue Jays on Thursday.
Ward, 31, gave the Angels a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer off Chris Bassitt in the first inning. He’s now gone deep in two of his last three games, and it ‘improves’ his slash to .181/.224/.391. Ward has been one of the most hot/cold players players in the sport over the last few years, so fantasy managers who can afford to make some roster moves may want to look at Ward while the going is good.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. picked up three hits and scored twice in an 8-5 win over the Angels on Thursday.
Guerrero also drew a walk. It gives the first baseman multiple hits in back-to-back games, and it’s the third time in May that he’s reached that mark. That’s helped raise his average from .268 to .295, and the only thing fantasy managers can be disappointed with is his .432 slugging percentage. That number should continue to climb as the season unfolds, but Vladdy Jr. has had some inconsistent seasons when it comes to power production.
Chad Green picked up his first save of 2025 with a scoreless ninth against the Angels on Thursday.
Green got the save after Jeff Hoffman worked in back-to-back games — and struggled — in the first two contests against the Angels. He struck out two and looked the part while needing just nine pitches to get through the inning. Hoffman should remain the closer, but Green is on his tail if the struggles were to continue.
Chris Bassitt allowed five runs — four earned — while working six-plus innings against the Angels on Thursday while picking up a win.
Bassitt allowed three runs over the first two innings on a pair of homers, but settled down over his next four frames. He came out to work the seventh, but ended up being charged for two more runs after leaving the contest. The 36-year-old veteran has forged a 3.35 ERA and outstanding 49/8 K/BB ratio over the first quarter of the season, but this wasn’t him at his best. He’ll get the Rays next week if the rotation order stays the same for Toronto.
José Soriano allowed three runs over five innings while not factoring in the decision Thursday against the Blue Jays.
Soriano left with a 4-3 lead, but it was erased quickly after his departure. The 26-year-old was not exactly dominant in his outing with eight hits allowed and four free passes, but he did strike out six to help balance things out a smidgen. Soriano takes an even ERA of 4.00 into a scheduled start against the Padres in San Diego on Tuesday. There should be better options for that one.
