Week 9 was not as catastrophically disastrous as Week 8, but there were several significant injuries once again. This should not come as a surprise to anyone as it is a weekly occurrence where key players go down and wreak havoc on fantasy lineups. We are heading into the stretch run with the fantasy playoffs quickly approaching so now is the time to pursue trades and build your rosters for the postseason. So without further ado, here is the next edition of the fantasy football walking wounded.
Ben Roethlisberger (QB – PIT)
Roethlisberger returned from a knee injury to play against Oakland in Week 9 only to get injured again. He sustained a foot injury which resulted in him getting carted off the field. It is expected he will miss at least next week’s game and then have the following week off with the Steelers on a bye. Roethlisberger is expected back for Week 12 at the earliest and you will have to endure at least another week with Landry Jones at quarterback which will have a detrimental effect on Antonio Brown.
LeSean McCoy (RB – BUF)
McCoy suffered a shoulder injury during Buffalo’s game against Miami on Sunday. He will undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury, but the reports out of Buffalo indicate the injury is not considered serious. McCoy also insists he could have gone back in the game if necessary. The Bills play on Thursday night this week so they will need to make a decision quickly about his status against the Jets. Even if healthy, he will have a difficult time running against the Jets' solid defense in Rex Ryan’s return to Met Life Stadium.
Latavius Murray (RB – OAK)
Murray was knocked out of this week’s game against Pittsburgh with what appeared to be a concussion. He was hit hard and subsequently fumbled before being removed from the game. Murray has had a rough time staying healthy this season and his status for Week 10 will need to be monitored during the week.
Dion Lewis (RB – NE)
Lewis left this week’s game against the Redskins with a knee injury. The preliminary reports are that he has an injured ACL which could be devastating news for fantasy owners. He will undergo an MRI on Monday which will determine the severity but you can expect Lewis will at least miss next week’s game against the Giants. Look for James White to replace Lewis in the backfield on most downs.
Austin Seferian-Jenkins (TE – TB)
Despite practicing in full on Friday, Tampa Bay held Seferian-Jenkins out of the lineup on Sunday. This could have been a great matchup against a terrible Giants defense but now fantasy owners will have to wait until Week 10 to put him back in the lineup.
DeMarcus Ware (DL – DEN)
Ware re-aggravated a back injury he sustained a few weeks ago and was taken out of Denver’s game against the Colts on Sunday. He has indicated he could miss a game or two to allow his back to recover which is bad news for fantasy owners in IDP leagues. He is a prolific pass rusher and a big part of why Denver has one of the top defenses in the league. Keep him stashed if you have roster flexibility.
Sean Lee (LB – DAL)
Lee was removed from Sunday night’s game against the Eagles after sustaining a concussion. This was the second concussion he has suffered this season and his status for next week against Tampa Bay is in jeopardy. Lee is one of the best IDP players in the league but he has always had issues staying healthy. Check back in during the week for an update on his status.
Teddy Bridgewater (QB – MIN)
Bridgewater sustained a concussion during the Vikings' game against St. Louis on Sunday. He was hit in the head on a feet-first slide and then smacked his head on the ground as well. He appeared knocked unconscious for a few seconds but claims he was ready to go back in the game later if necessary. Bridgewater will have to go through the concussion protocol during the week but it appears he should be able to play in Week 10 barring any setbacks.
