Fantasy Baseball News & Notes
Alvarez Gets Call-Up for Big Series
Heading into their most important series of the year, reports are that the Mets are promoting top prospect, Francisco Álvarez. Alvarez is the No. 1 prospect in baseball according to the MLB pipeline. According to Joel Sherman of the NY Post, he should get designated hitter at-bats against lefties and the first pitcher the Mets are scheduled to face is lefty Max Fried. This is a player that some call “generational” and he is the third of the Mets top prospects to earn a promotion this month, following the promotions of Brett Baty and Mark Vientos. The Mets have a three-game series with the Braves this weekend as they hold a one-game lead in the National League East.
Ohtani’s Near No-No
Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani almost pulled off what would have been the perfect topping to a near-perfect season- a no-hitter. Ohtani took the no-no into the eighth inning before the A’s Connor Capel broke it up with a single off the glove of Angels shortstop Livan Soto. Ohtani had retired 22 straight batters after allowing a leadoff walk to start the game and his final line was only two hits allowed and 10 strikeouts. The two-way star improved to 15-8 on the year with an ERA of 2.35 and he also extended his hitting streak to 14 games while hitting .275 with 94 RBIs and 34 home runs.
Blue Jays Clinch Playoff Spot
The Blue Jays have clinched a playoff spot for the second time in three years, but they still have a lot to play for. The Jays are trying to stay ahead of the Rays and Mariners for first in the wild-card race, which would allow them to play its best-of-three first-round series at home starting Oct. 7.
Mariners Magic Number at 1
The Mariners moved a half-game ahead of Tampa Bay for the second of three AL wild cards after double-dong nights by Jarred Kelenic and Mitch Haniger in an 11-inning win over the Rangers. They reduced their magic number to one for clinching a postseason spot and one more win or a Baltimore loss would give Seattle its first playoff appearance since 2001, ending the longest drought in the four major North American professional sports.
Mets and Braves Ready for Huge Series
The Mets and Braves are gearing up for baseball’s biggest series of the season this weekend. They are scheduled to play three games at Trust Park in Atlanta, in a series that will have major consequences on the NL East division title. The team that wins this series gets a huge upper hand in winning the division over the final three games of the season next week. If the Mets manage to sweep they win the division and will be a force in the playoffs for the first time in six years. It all starts tonight with Jacob deGrom (5-3, 2.93 ERA) facing off against the Braves Max Fried (13-7, 2.50 ERA).
