*NOTE: Not all quarterbacks have a writeup below. That doesn't mean that only the below options fit in each category. Check the graph below to see where the others rank.
*Teams that have clinched their playoff spot meaning they may rest players: Cowboys, Giants, Patriots, Steelers and Texans. Be cautious with your selections as many clubs could rest players.
ELITE OPTIONS
Matt Ryan has thrown for seven scores and no picks the last three games. At home this season he’s averaging 321 passing yards and two scores while being picked off just four times in seven games.
Drew Brees went for 376/3 in the first matchup. His last two games, after the two no-shows in the fantasy game, Brees has thrown for an average of an average of 339 yards and two scores. The Falcons have the 19th best defense according to Pro Football Focus (PFF).
Tom Brady produced 87 percent of his 214 passing yards in Week 16 in the air (only 27 came after the catch). Sounds like the Pats will not be resting players.
SOLID PLAYS
Cam Newton flat out stinks right now, no matter what anyone says. In Week 16 he completed just one of nine passes he attempted that were in air for 20-yards. Elite talent, good matchup though. I really don’t want to start him though if it was my team, but an explosive effort is always a possibility. #JustSaying
Ben Roethlisberger is out for Week 17.
Russell Wilson faces the Niners, a completely beatable unit (they have the second worst D according to PFF). Wilson will be without Tyler Lockett, and the health of Thomas Rawls (shoulder) is also in doubt. Against vastly superior offenses the last two weeks (LA, ARI) Wilson threw for seven scores.
Jameis Winston has four scores the last two games... but five picks. That’s 22 turnovers (17 interceptions) in 15 games for Winston. Carolina held Winston to 219 yards and a score earlier this season, and Winston has 10 scores his last seven games and he’s been under 250 passing yards 3-of-5 games.
Matthew Stafford continues to play good football while at the same time struggling for QB1-dom. Stafford hasn’t thrown for a score in two games and has one passing score in three. He actually has two rushing scores in three games. He also has turned the ball over five times the last three games. On the top-10 fence yet again.
Blake Bortles crushed the Titans, again, but he has had no success against anyone else. This season against non-Titans opponents he has thrown for 226 yards and 1.6 touchdowns and outing. #DeceivingNumbers
Kirk Cousins has one score in two games. He’s thrown 0/1 touchdown passes in ¾ games. In that time though he’s run for three scores. His last seven games he has thrown for 311 an outings with a 105.7 QB Rating.
Eli Manning hit on just two of 12 passes that were in the air for 20-yards against the Eagles as he was picked twice. In 2-of-3 games it’s been one score for Eli, and in 3/5 games he’s failed to throw for 200-yards. He’s also been dreadful on the road this season with a 77.6 QB Rating.
Carson Palmer is playing his best football of the season. He’s thrown two scores in 5/6 games and just once in five outings has he been under 284 passing yards. The Rams have been battered for 29 scores this season and have picked off just eight passes, but they are the #1 pass D according to PFF and the o-line has often crumbled under pressure this season in front of Palmer.
RISKY PLAYS
Dak Prescott seems unlikely to play four quarters even if he’s active. So effective is he though. He threw for 287 yards, ran for 38, and produced three scores in an earlier matchup with the Eagles. The Eagles are the 11th overall D according to PFF (though reeling), but this one likely comes down to how much Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott and Dez Bryant play.
Colin Kaepernick threw for 21 yards on 14 dropbacks when under pressure last week as the Rams thrashed the Niners offensive line. Seattle is ranked 19th as a pass rush unit (PFF) so Colin should have more time this week.
Trevor Siemian threw three passes in Week 16 that should have, but weren’t, picked off (only one pass was actually picked off). He hit on just 3-of-13 passes over 10-yards and was simply put, completely ineffective (at best). That’s why it sounds like Paxton Lynch will get a chance to start. The rookie hasn’t looked at all sharp over three games though at least he gets to start at home against a Raiders team that has allowed 25 touchdown passes.
Joe Flacco Had a QB Rating of 30.5 last week on the 18 dropbacks in which he was pressure. The mark was 108.8 when he wasn’t under heat. He threw for an average of 234 the last two weeks and at the end of November he threw for 234/1/1 against the Bengals.
Andy Dalton has earned a negative grade in 5-of-8 games according to PFF. He has one touchdown pass the last two games and in six of eight outings he’s thrown one or zero scores. In the first matchup, without A.J. Green, he threw for 283/1.
QUARTERBACKS TO AVOID
Alex Smith has thrown for three picks in three games. His last seven games he has five touchdown passes. Hey, at least he has two rushing scores the last two games.
Sam Bradford has thrown for 290-yards in 3-straight outings. Alas, he has but six touchdown passes in six games. Bradford threw for 228 yards and a score in the first matchup. The Bears allow just 223.2 yards a game through the air.
Tom Savage attempted just six passes last week more than 10-yards downfield and nothing over 20 as he regressed substantially from a solid showing in Week 15. The Titans are outside the top-20 defenses according to PFF though their pass rush comes in at #11. Savage is an ultra-risky dart throw.
Derek Carr’s season is over with his broken leg. Matt McGloin has completed 58.3 percent of his passes with 11 score and 11 picks in 266 career attempts. He faces Denver. Avoid at all costs.
Ryan Tannehill (knee) is seemingly holding out a small sliver of hope that he could play this week which seems crazy-time talk. Matt Moore has thrown for six touchdowns and no picks through two outings. It should be noted that 167 of the yards he threw for last week came after the catch (233 yards in total).
Jerad Goff attempted just five passes of more than 10-yards in Week 16. You just can’t be a fantasy option doing that.
Marcus Mariota is done for the year. Hello Matt Cassel. Why the hell am I writing about Matt Cassel?
