Based on the pitchers we are looking at here for the early and afternoon games, today looks more like a day I would use a series of mini-stacks instead of a full four-player stack. OK, maybe one exception being the Red Sox.
Boston has been crushing right-handed pitching all season and Sam Gaviglio isn’t exactly someone in whom I put a lot of faith in. The issue is, of course, price. You get a little bit of salary relief with Brock Holt batting second today, but still, to get both Mookie Betts and J.D. Martínez in together could be real tough. You may be able to get a little creative if you want to go the Holt, Martinez, Xander Bogaerts , Jackie Bradley route, but it’s not like many of us are dying to get JBJ into our lineups. You could get crazy with maybe Tzu-Wei Lin , Betts, Holt and then Martinez, but again, relying on the unknown/potentially unsavory.
Mini-Stacks I’m looking at include:
Minnesota Twins
Joe Mauer /Eddie Rosario – the 1-2 punch for the Twins today faces Chris Archer who has had some serious struggles with lefty hitters this season.
Eduardo Escobar /Jorge Polanco – the switch-hitters will attack Archer from the left side of the plate and make a nice middle-of-the-order tandem. Escobar has hit safely in five of his last six and Polanco has hit safely in four-straight with a double, a triple, two RBI and a stolen base.
Milwaukee Brewers
I really like their lefty bats – Christian Yelich , Travis Shaw and even Brad Miller , but they are spread out in the lineup, so a three-player stack may work to get you two of the three. Shaw with Hernán Pérez and Brad Miller could be the sneaky stack to use today.
Washington Nationals
Keep tabs on the lefty hitters when this lineup comes out. Zack Wheeler continues to have issues with strong lefty hitters, so guys like Bryce Harper , Adam Eaton and Juan Soto should be in-play here atop the Nationals’ order.
St. Louis Cardinals
Luis Castillo has been terrible overall this year and while the Cardinals lineup is loaded with right-handed bats, I’m definitely targeting their lefties like Matt Carpenter , Kolten Wong , Greg García (if in the lineup) and switch-hitter Dexter Fowler . Again, I’m not stacking the whole way, but if Mike Matheny considers Flaherty in the eight-hole and we can get a Wong/Carpenter tandem, I’d be in for that against Castillo.
