DISH DIAMONDS – The Best Hitting Matchups of the Day
Elvis Andrus has one RBI, one theft an a .455 batting average over 11 at-bats against Chris Tillman.
Gordon Beckham has hit .350 with two homers against lefties this season. He faces Tyler Skaggs in his first start back from the DL.
Brandon Guyer has hit .302 against lefties. He faces Vidal Nuno Wednesday.
Josh Hamilton has a .438 average and 1.099 OPS against John Danks over 16 plate appearances. Chris Iannetta has a .375 OBP and .536 SLG against lefties as well.
Raul Ibanez has a homer and five RBIs over 11 at-bats. He's hitting .455 against Kevin Correia. He's not the only one who has had success in the matchup. Lorenzo Cain has seven hits in 12 at-bats. Mike Moustakas has six hits in 14 at-bats. Omar Infante has hit .381 over 21 at-bats. Billy Butler is at .353 over 17 at-bats.
Joe Mauer has six RBIs an a big .417 batting average against Jason Vargas over 24 at-bats. Can he continue that given how brutal he has been this year?
Justin Morneau has hit .320 with an .880 OPS against Doug Fister over 25 plate appearances. He's gone deep once with four RBIs.
Kyle Seager has a homer, five RBIs an a .357 batting average in 14 at-bats against Brad Peacock.
Giancarlo Stanton is a beast at the dish, and he's hit three homers with a .919 OPS over 42 plate appearances against Cole Hamels. Be warned though – he's also struck out 16 times.
Will Venable has six hits in 12 at-bats against Johnny Cueto. He's gone deep twice with five RBIs. Chase Headley has also had success against the start hurler with a .389 average over 18 at-bats.
Rickie Weeks has an OPS over .800 against lefties this season. He's facing lefty J.A. Happ who he's hit .500 against with two homers in 14 at-bats. Ryan Braun has also had suggest blasting three homers with six RBIs an a 1.099 OPS over 25 plate appearances.
DISH DISASTERS – Worst Hitting Matchups of the Day
Erick Aybar has had a good season. Unfortunately he's had no success against John Danks producing a mere three hits in 23 at-bats (.130).
Do you know your countries national anthem? It might be pretty important on a hot day.
Alejandro De Aza faces Tyler Skaggs. In 47 at-bats this season against port siders he's produced two hits. Adan Dunn has hit .171 with one homer in 41 at-bats, and Conor Gillaspie is at .231 against lefties.
Ian Desmond has 21 strikeouts in 74 at-bats against lefties. He's also hit .230 with a .288 OBP. Not much to like there. He faces Tyler Matzek.
Salvador Perez has three hits in 17 at-bats against Kevin Correia. Not good. Eric Hosmer isn't any better at .190 with two RBIs over 21 at-bats.
Yadier Molina has struggled the last month, and he's never quite figured out Ryan Vogelsong. In 16 at-bats he's produced only three hits (.188).
Nick Punto hitting .172 with 11 Ks in 29 at-bats against Justin Verlander. Not remotely good. John Jaso is at .154 over 13 at-bats while Alberto Callaspo is at .211 over 19 at-bats.
Mark Reynolds... woof. In 16 at-bats against J.A. Happ Reynolds has no hits and eight strikeouts.
Alex Rios has but one hit, along with four strikeouts, against Chris Tillman over 10 at-bats.
Kurt Suzuki has six hits against Jason Vargas. Too bad it's over 32 at-bats so he's hit .188. That's impressive work if you're Josh Willingham though given that the slugger has hit .105 over 19 at-bats. Trevor Plouffe has returned, and he's returning to a poor matchup given that he's got three hits in 19 at-bats. Kendrys Morales not much better at .227, though he does have two homers in 22 at-bats.

Jonny Cueto versus the Padres in San Diego. Period.
I don't know what to think, but I've never thought of doing this with watermelons.
Doug Fister at home against the Rockies. He is opposed by Tyler Matzek, hardly a scary matchup, even if the opposition can hit. Fister has yet to allow more than four runs in an outing over his last nine trips to the field, and he's allowed two or fewer runs six of those nine starts. He's also thrown at least six innings in eight of those nine outings. Consistency like that is nice to turn to.
Charlie Morton pitches at home against the D'backs. Morton has a 2.22 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over seven home starts this season, and the last time he faced the Diamondbacks he tossed seven innings of two run ball. Morton has also gone at least six frames in his last four starts, and over his last seven outings he's allowed more than two earned runs just one time.
Tyson Ross takes on the Reds. Over 16 innings against the Big Red Machine he's sporting a 1.13 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. He held the Reds to one run over seven innings May 15th. He's got a 2.39 ERA and 1.03 WHIP at home, and the Reds are just 16th in OPS against righties this season.
Chris Tillman faces the Rangers. The last time he took the bump against them he recorded three outs while allowing five runs. He's been locked in his last two outings though (1 ER, 15 IP) after struggling for a month. Giving Tillman a shot isn't a terrible idea as he's had a 2.47 ERA and 1.21 WHIP at home.
MOUND MESSES – Starting Pitchers to Avoid
Trevor Bauer faces the Dodgers, the 5th best team in baseball according to OPS against righties. Bauer has also allowed at least three runs in his last five starts as his ERA has gone from 3.63 to 4.39. Bauer has also allowed four big flies in his last two games and he's only got one win in this stretch of outings.
Jesse Chavez is right handed. He takes on the Tigers who are third in baseball in OPS against righties. He's coming off his first game of fewer than six innings pitched in six outings. He's walked seven batters in his last two outings. The previous five he walked six. In 15 innings against the Tigers he's the sad owner of a 10.20 ERA, 2.33 WHIP and .412 BAA. Nearly all of that is out of the bullpen, but wow is that awful work.
Wily Peralta takes his game to Toronto Wednesday. He's won each of his last five starts but he's also not exactly been sharp his last three outings: 25 hits, 1.35 WHIP, 4.35 ERA and two homers allowed. The Jays are also first in baseball in homers against righties and second in OPS.
“Staff didn’t know what on earth had just happened," witness says. "The stench was unreal.” To what were they referring?
Justin Verlander has allowed five runs over his last two outings to drop his ERA to 4.80. That's scary folks. He dropped his ERA to 4.80. Verlander has also allowed seven homers in his last seven outings, has permitted 39 hits over his last 31.2 innings, and he faces an Athletics club that has the 4th best OPS in baseball against righties.
Travis Wood has a 4.52 ERA and 1.40 WHIP this season. He's also failed to record more than five Ks just once in his last 10 outings. He's also been stunningly brutal on the road this season with a 6.07 ERA and 1.63 WHIP over eight outings. He pitches in Fenway.
