Game 2 of the National League Divisional Series kicks off with a National League East battle between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies.

The Mets took down Game 1 after surviving a dominant start by Phillies “Ace” Zack Wheeler only to get to the Philadelphia bullpen for six runs enroute to a 6-2 victory.

Before giving our Mets vs Phillies predictions, lets take a look at the top storylines and pitching matchups.

Mets vs Phillies Predictions For NL Divisional Round Game 2

The Phillies began Game 1 with a leadoff homer from Kyle Schwarber and then got seven shutout innings from Zack Wheeler but the Mets immediately got to the Phillies bullpen and pulled away with a 6-2 victory.

The Mets have been no strangers to the comeback victory, noting their Game 3 comeback win against the Brewers off Devin Williams to make it to the NLDS.

So, what does that mean for the series going forward? Can the Mets offense keep coming through time and time again?

The lineup is certainly talented enough to always be live to put up runs on the board and their pitching has been good as well which has kept the games close so that their offense can get an opportunity to give them leads.

The Mets send Luis Severino to the mound here this afternoon.  While the Phillies pitch southpaw Cristopher Sanchez who had a break out year in 2024.

Before making our Mets vs Phillies predictions for Game 2 lets look at the top storylines and break down the pitching matchups.

New York Mets: Can the Miracle Mets Stay Hot?

I mean, things didn't look good for New York yesterday.  Wheeler got over 30 swing and misses as he shut them down over seven shutout innings. But the Mets pitching staff also dominated, with Kodai Senga starting the game off and David Peterson following him in relief.

In Game 2 the Mets are pitching Luis Severino and again, the Phillies are favorites but if Severino can just keep the Mets within striking distance, this Phillies bullpen might have their hands full in the later innings after having to work hard in Game 1.

Philadelphia Phillies: Will the Phillies Have Short Memories?

You lead the game off with a homer and then get seven shutout innings from your best pitcher but the offense was only able to score that lone run all game and your bullpen immediately gives up the lead and falls apart as you lose 6-2.

The Phillies need to be able to put that game behind them and reset with Cristopher Sanchez on the mound here today.

The Phillies offense is still pretty elite and Luis Severino is far from being a shutdown starter.

Will the Phillies have a short memory or are they going to be stuck in quick sand while the Mets play off their momentum?

Mets vs Phillies Starting Pitcher & Lineup

Luis Severino, New York Mets

Severino faced the Phillies twice this season and had quality starts in each outing, going six innings while allowing three runs with seven strikeouts in one outing and five strikeouts in the other.

In the postseason, Severino is 1-0, going six innings while allowing three runs with three strikeouts against the Brewers.

Severino was good, not great this season but all the Mets offense needs for him to give the Mets another quality start and keep this game within striking distance.

Cristopher Sanchez, Philadelphia Phillies

Sanchez faced the Mets three times this season with strong results, allowing just six runs over 17.2 innings while striking out 19.

Sanchez is a ground ball pitcher that does not give up, only 11 on the season, he also doesn't strike out a ton of hitters so with the balls being put in play, this could be a tough day for the Phillies if the Mets are able to string together base runners.

Mets vs Phillies: Phillies ML (-142 at DraftKings Sportsbook)

For me, this is simply the pitching matchups. I think the Phillies offense has a better shot of putting up runs against Luis Severino than the Mets do against Cristopher Sanchez given his ground ball style of pitching which limits home runs allowed.

Conversely, I can see the Phillies getting more production than the two runs they got yesterday in this matchup with a right-handed pitching on the mound.
