College Football DFS Playbook & Core Plays - Week 8 Thursday: Jeff Sims Leads Georgia Tech
Unlike the NFL, college football's version of Thursday night football didn't disappoint last week with a pair of high-scoring games and plenty of offense. Let's hope we get more of the same this Thursday night for our Week 8 DFS CFB lineups. We have two games both kicking off at 7:30 pm ET on this small slate for college football DFS lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel. Georgia Tech is a three-point home favorite over Virginia with a 47 over/under, and South Alabama is favored by three at home with a 46.5 over/under against Troy. Two tight matchups should make CFB daily fantasy lineups more interesting. Keep an eye out for the CFB DFS Playbook, core plays, PrizePicks top picks & more for Saturday's full slate of Week 8 college football games. Let's now dive in to the CFB DFS top picks and plays for Thursday night, October 20th.
DFS CFB Week 8 Thursday Top Plays
Carter Bradley – QB, South Alabama ($8,300 DK / $11,000 FD)
Bradley is the most expensive QB on both sites because he has the highest ceiling. You can go with Brennan Armstrong on the cheaper end for a safer floor in cash, but Bradley has the better chance at being the top scoring QB on the slate – even in a tough matchup against Troy. We’ve seen Bradley throw for three TDs in four of six games and put up at least 29 DK in three contests. That’s better than all the other quarterbacks in action tonight.
Jeff Sims – QB, Georgia Tech ($6,200 DK / $10,000 FD)
We’ll have to monitor Sims’ status, but he’s a solid Super-Flex option if he’s playing. The Georgia Tech dual-threat left the Week 6 game early with an undisclosed injury and is “day-to-day” according to the head coach. Tech being favored means he’s likely playing, and the bye week in between helps. If he’s playing, Sims can give you 20+ DFS points as a floor with his rushing ability. If he sits, then backup Zach Gibson is a big value on both sites.
La’Damian Webb – RB, South Alabama ($7,400 DK / $9,700 FD)
Here’s another key injury to monitor for Thursday night. Webb left last week’s game early with some type of lower body injury and ended up only playing a few snaps. If he’s starting, then Webb is the best RB on the slate in all formats. He had at least 15 DK in each of the five previous games with a lead back’s worth of touches. No other RB on this slate has seen the same consistent workload with production like Webb this season. If he’s out, then Marco Lee is the value play to get into lineups as he had 21 DK, 93 yards, and two TDs on 15 carries last week with Webb out.
Caullin Lacy – WR, South Alabama ($6,400 DK / $9,500 FD)
Jalen Wayne is the high-ceiling GPP option from South Alabama’s receiving corps, but Lacy is the better floor play for cash. He has at least 13 DK in every game thus far and just went off for 12 receptions, 133 yards, a TD and 34 DK last week. It’s Lacy and Wayne as the top targets for QB Carter Bradley and both are solid pairing options on this short slate. Troy presents a tough matchup, but it’s tough to play matchups with only two games tonight.
Keytaon Thompson – WR, Virginia ($6,000 DK / $8,500 FD)
There’s not much to get excited about from Virginia’s offense this year, but Thompson is consistently getting it done for DFS. After being used more in a hybrid role last year, the former QB is now the top receiver for UVA with his 41 receptions and 449 receiving yards both leading the team by a decent margin thus far. His DFS floor is double-digit PPR points with a high volume of targets and receptions in this offense, and that shouldn’t change this week. He’s arguably the best cash WR on the slate.
Hassan Hall – RB, Georgia Tech ($5,200 DK / $7,800 FD)
It took a few weeks, but Hall has seemingly finally taken over the lead back duties in Georgia Tech’s backfield during ACC play. The former Louisville transfer had 20 carries for 157 rushing yards vs. Pitt two games ago and then had 17 carries for 70 yards last time out. He's become Tech's workhorse with Donte Smith barely getting touches now. Hall makes a solid cash play on this slate without many RBs locked into carries, and he gets a matchup against Virginia’s below-average rush defense. Plus, Georgia Tech may lean on Hall and the run game even more with Jeff Sims banged up.
RaJae’ Johnson – WR, Troy ($4,200 DK / $6,800 FD)
With Jabre Barber out for Troy last week, Johnson stepped up with three catches for 57 yards and a TD. That increased role and production should continue with Barber out indefinitely with a leg injury. Tez Johnson is the headliner and also a great play from Troy’s WR corps, but Johnson is a decent value on this slate without many trustworthy ones.
Leo Blackburn – WR, Georgia Tech ($3,100 DK / $5,500 FD)
Blackburn finally made his college debut last game after sitting out the 2021 season with a torn ACL. It was encouraging to see him get involved right away with three catches for 49 yards and a TD. He also benefited from Malachi Carter sitting out, which may be the case again tonight with Carter’s status up in the air. Blackburn is very cheap on both sites and doesn’t need to do much to return value.
Also Consider:
- Brennan Armstrong – QB, Virginia
- Tez Johnson – WR, Troy
- Jalen Wayne – WR, South Alabama
- DK Billingsley – RB, Troy (mispriced and huge value on DK)
- Nate McCollum – WR, Georgia Tech
- Perris Jones – RB, Virginia
