Brooks Baldwin was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup with lower back tightness.
Austin Slater will take over in left field on Tuesday night against the Blue Jays. Baldwin is presumably day-to-day for now. It doesn’t sound like a significant concern.
Titans coach Brian Callahan said “I think we can do a better job managing that load so they both play a little more evenly” when asked about Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears.
Even when Spears was healthy last year, Callahan used him as more of a third-down back. Through two years, Spears has played on 253 running plays (blocking 63 times) and 626 passing plays (blocking 119 times) per PFF. Callahan also seems to always preface this with something along the lines of “in a perfect world,” as he did in both this quote and in one we blurbed earlier in May. It’s not completely out of the range of outcomes that Tony Pollard loses major snaps and carries this year — losing a few carries should be the expectation given how many games last year he played as essentially the only back Callahan trusted to run the ball. But we’re not completely sold on the idea of Spears as a 1B just yet. Spears is going to have to show more in camp or Callahan is going to have to actually give him a real snap share as a runner with Pollard active before this becomes more than offseason talk.
Nationals RHP prospect Travis Sykora has been diagnosed with right triceps soreness and will be shut down from throwing for 2-3 weeks.
Sykora will not pitch in next week’s All-Star Futures Game, which is a legitimate bummer for fantasy managers, and is going to be shut down until late July or early August. The positive news here is that it looks like the hard-throwing 21-year-old top pitching prospect will return before the season wraps up.
Nationals signed RHP Luis García to a one-year contract.
García winds up latching on with Washington just a few days after being jettisoned from the Dodgers’ crowded bullpen mix. The well-traveled 38-year-old veteran reliever posted a bloated 5.27 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and 24/16 K/BB ratio over 27 1/3 innings (28 appearances) earlier this year for Los Angeles. He’ll likely operate in middle relief for the Nationals and can be safely ignored in all fantasy formats.
Nationals recalled C Drew Millas from Triple-A Rochester.
Millas returns to the big leagues for Tuesday’s game against the Cardinals with starter Keibert Ruiz landing on the concussion injured list. He’ll split the catching duties with Riley Adams moving forward.
Nationals placed C Keibert Ruiz on the 7-day concussion injured list.
Ruiz heads back to the concussion injured list for the second time in the last two weeks. At this point we’re just hoping the 26-year-old backstop makes a full recovery as quickly as possible. There is no timetable for his return at the moment.
