Before the college football season started, all the talk was on the quarterbacks. And maybe deservedly so. When you have guys like Quinn Ewers, Jalen Milroe, Shedeur Sanders and plenty others, they’re going to get some attention.

But it’s a Boise State running back that has since stolen the spotlight, as anyone who pays attention to anything CFB-related knows by now. Ashton Jeanty has had and continues to have a historic 2024 campaign, seemingly out of nowhere. But he’s certainly here now.

It was easy to disregard his first performance against a school like Georgia Southern. Then he came out the very next week and did the same thing to an Oregon team right in the mix for the CFP Championship.

This kid is for real, and if he keeps this up, his name will be cemented in with the all-time college football greats. Let’s take a look at a little more about Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, including his current odds to win the 2024 Heisman Trophy Award.

Ashton Jeanty Stats, Height, Weight & More

Jeanty was a composite 3-star RB prospect coming out of high school in Frisco, TX but wasn’t recruited all that much by any big-time programs. Aside from Boise State, he held offers from teams such as Cal, Kansas and Tulane amongst others.

Boy, is he making coaches look silly right about now. At 5’9’’, 215 lbs., he had a really good freshman season (976 total yards, 7 touchdowns) followed up by a great sophomore campaign (1,916 total yards, 19 touchdowns) leading up to this legendary junior season.

Through 6 games of the 2024 campaign, Jeanty has amassed 1,287 total yards to go along with 18 total touchdowns. That makes for ridiculous averages of 9.9 yards per carry and 208 rushing yards per game.

2024 Heisman Favorites: Current Heisman Odds At DraftKings Sportsbook

The Hesiman odds will vary depending on which sportsbook you’re looking at, but Ashton Jeanty is right up there at the top regardless.

Here are Jeanty’s Heisman odds at DraftKings Sportsbook, along with the other current 2024 Heisman favorites:

  • Ashton Jeanty - Boise State RB (+220)
  • Cam Ward - Miami QB (+250)
  • Dillon Gabriel - Oregon QB (+380)

The next man on the list is Clemson QB Cade Klubnik, but he’s all the way down at +1600 odds, which essentially tells you this is a 3-man Heisman race from here on out.

Most Rushing Yards In A College Season: Can Jeanty Get There?

In 1988, Oklahoma State RB Barry Sanders rushed for 2,628 yards. That record still stands to this day, but it’s entirely possible that the Boise State running back is able to eclipse that mark.

Interestingly enough, DraftKings actually has a specific market available for this particular wager. It’s under a tab labeled ‘Ashton Jeanty’ when browsing college football, and the market is listed as “Ashton Jeanty to break NCAAF Single Season Rushing Yard Record (2,629+ Yards in first 12 Regular Season Games)”.

There is only one bet available, which is the ‘yes’ at +300. In order to do so, he would have to average over 230 yards per game from here on out. So, while it’s not practical, it is possible. He’s already recorded 2 games of 259+ rushing yards this season.

When Was The Last Time A Running Back Won The Heisman Trophy?

The last time a running back won the Heisman Trophy Award was nearly a decade ago when Alabama’s Mark Ingram took home the honors. Since the year 2000, only 3 running backs have won the Heisman (Reggie Bush, USC 2005 and Mark Ingram, Alabama 2009).

And that’s part of what makes Ashton Jeanty’s story all the more intriguing. He has a great chance to do something that’s been done seldomly in recent memory, and if you were to look at the betting odds, it’s safe to say he’s well on his way.
