Shane Baz allowed four hits and no runs with one walk and six strikeouts across seven innings in a 1-0 win against the Padres on Friday.
Baz was able to regain his form here after a rough start last weekend against the Yankees. The Padres only put one man in scoring position after the third inning – on a hit by pitch and stolen base by Jose Iglesias with two outs in the seventh – and never mounted anything that came close to a rally against him. He simply got ahead with his fastball and then dropped curveball after curveball to shut them down. This great start gave him a 2.45 ERA in what’s shaping up to be a huge breakout season. His next start is scheduled to come against the Royals.
Pirates designated INF Michael Helman for assignment.
Helman was just claimed off of waivers from the Cardinals on Wednesday, but he became a roster casualty once again as the Pirates needed to free up a spot on their 40-man for Nick Solak on Friday. Once again, he could attract some interest on waivers.
Giants signed INF Drew Ellis to a minor league contract.
The 29-year-old infielder hasn’t appeared in the big leagues since taking 29 plate appearances with the Phillies back in 2023. He was off to a terrific start for the Lexington Legends in the independent Atlantic League, slashing .373/.467/.765 with five homers and 11 RBI in 60 plate appearances, which was enough for the Giants to take a chance on him. He’ll add infield depth in the upper minors.
Diamondbacks recalled RHP Scott McGough from Triple-A Reno.
The 35-year-old right-hander has made just one appearance with the Diamondbacks this season, working two scoreless frames. He’ll give manager Torey Lovullo another potential weapon to deploy in the middle innings.
Diamondbacks placed LHP Eduardo Rodriguez on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 15, with left shoulder inflammation.
The 32-year-old southpaw felt something in his shoulder following Wednesday’s start against the Giants. No word yet on the severity of the issue or how long he’ll be sidelined for, but he’ll miss a couple of weeks at a minimum. Scott McGough was recalled from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move on Friday. Expect Ryne Nelson to assume Rodriguez’s spot in the Diamondbacks’ rotation.
Twins transferred RHP Michael Tonkin to the 60-day injured list.
The 35-year-old right-hander is currently on a minor league rehab assignment while recovering from a right shoulder strain. Nothing has changed in his prognosis, this was done as a procedural move to free up a spot on the team’s 40-man roster for Ryan Fitzgerald who had his contract selected on Friday.
Twins selected the contract of INF Ryan Fitzgerald from Triple-A St. Paul.
The 30-year-old infielder will add some infield depth for the Twins while Carlos Correa (concussion) is sidelined. Fitzgerald was off to a terrific start at the Triple-A level, slashing .328/.426/.528 with four homers, 21 RBI, three swipes and a 29/19 K/BB ratio through his first 35 games.
