Brandon Young allowed three runs over four innings against the Reds in his first career start Saturday.

He gave up seven hits, walked three and struck out three. Young’s 81 pitches produced a total of four whiffs, all of them coming on the changeup he threw 17 times. It wasn’t an outing that will lead to recommendations to pick him up in mixed leagues, but at least he’ll always be able to say he outpitched Hunter Greene in his MLB debut.

Matt Gorski went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in a 4-0 win on Wednesday over the Mets.

Both the Pirates and Mets did little offensively in this one, with Gorski and his teammate Jared Triolo providing all of the combined run production from both sides with a pair of two-run shots. Gorski’s homer was crushed though. It travelled an estimated 407 feet through a brief downpour of rain on a hanging sweeper from Clay Holmes. He’s now started six of the Pirates last eight games at first base and while he doesn’t have much pedigree, he does both 80th percentile bat speed and sprint speed. That makes him worth a look in the deepest of leagues.

Bailey Falter allowed three hits, five walks, and zero runs with three strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings of work in a no-decision on Wednesday against the Mets.

What a weird start from Falter. This game was delayed due to rain and then a spot shower turned into a monsoon briefly during the second inning. Luckily for Falter, he only had to deal with the spot shower while Clay Holmes fell victim to the monsoon. Nevertheless, he had absolutely no idea where the ball was going for the entirety of his start and was mercifully pulled in the fourth inning with the bases loaded. Luckily for him, his bullpen held the Mets at bay and kept all of those inherited runners off his ledger. He’s lined up for a two-start week coming up against the Reds and Brewers with both starts coming at home.

Clay Holmes allowed seven hits and four runs with one walk and four strikeouts over six innings in a loss to the Pirates on Wednesday.

When Holmes began his most recent start last Friday, he was yet to allow a home run this season. Now, he’s allowed three, including two in this game. The first came in a strange set of circumstances though, as he was forced to pitch through momentary, torrential rain. A sweeper slipped out of his hand, sat in the middle of the plate, and Matt Gorski sent it deep over the left field fence. He did manage to grit his way through six innings for the fourth time in five starts, but he was nowhere near his best in this one. It should be noted that this was the first time Holmes has pitched this season on four days rest rather than his usual five. He’ll look to right the ship next time out against the Red Sox in Fenway Park.
