Robert MacIntyre closed out the Italian Open with a 7-under 64 to reach 14-under 270 on the week, then held off Matt Fitzpatrick in a playoff to hoist the hardware, his second career DP World Tour title.
MacIntyre looked like a rising star as recent as last year when he reached as high as 42nd in the OWGR. He's since fallen to 110th and admitted to his struggles after today's win, "This means everything. I was down and out about two or three months ago. I didn’t know what I was doing, didn’t know where to go. But we spoke to the right people, started working with Simon Shanks and I’ve hit two of the perfect golf shots into the last there. There’s so much hard work gone into this." The Scot's first win came at the 2020 Cyprus Showdown but a second, reaffirming win has to feel great for the 26-year-old. He vaults to 15th in the DP World Tour standings and pads his totals for the Ryder Cup qualifications. Even if he doesn't crack the final team, a win at Marco Simone GC will surely help his cause as a potential captain's pick.
Scotsman Robert MacIntyre is taking his next two weeks on home soil seriously, starting with his fourth event appearance in this week’s Scottish Open, and he refused to be distracted by questions about the LIV Golf series.
“I'm here to try and win the Scottish Open, next week try to win The Open Championship,” said the 25-year-old from Oban, Scotland, ahead of this week’s event at The Renaissance Club. “These two weeks are massive for my game and my career. I have a chance the next few weeks to do something special and I'm not worrying about what's going on.” In three previous starts at the Scottish Open, he was T-18 in 2021, T-14 in 2020 and missed the cut in 2019. On the season, MacIntyre has made seven cuts in 11 DPWT starts (best finish: T-9 at the Ras al Khaimah Classic in February) and is 5-of-6 in PGA Tour action, including a T-23 at the Masters and 77th at the PGA Championship. With two top-10 finishes at The Open Championship, the 25-year-old is securely in the field at Augusta National due to his performance a year ago. Finding some success to begin his 2022, MacIntyre has collected three top-15 finishes worldwide including a T-15 effort at the Genesis Invitational.
