Dylan Frittelli
Player News
Dylan Frittelli lasted 14 holes before calling it quits at the Memorial Tournament, citing an illness.
The South African stumbled out of the gate with three bogeys and a double before the turn, with one birdie helping him stay at 4-over at that point. From there, he rattled off a triple-triple-double-bogey-double stretch that ended in him withdrawing from the event. He cited an illness as the reason for his early exit. Frittelli was losing 14 shots to the field average at the time of his WD. Playing in his 140th PGA TOUR event, this will be his third mid-tourney WD, with all of them coming this season.
Dylan Frittelli coasted to a bogey-free, 3-under-par 34-33=67 in round one of the Genesis Scottish Open, putting him in a share of seventh place on the live leaderboard.
Frittelli opened his round with a wedge to two feet for a nice opening birdie to set the tone. He would remain steady with his iron, gaining more than three strokes on approach before his day was over. That set up seven scoring chances from inside of 13 feet, and he converted on three of them. The South African has now been inside of the top 10 after round one in three of his last five starts. The previous two fast starts resulted in a T35 at the Charles Schwab Challenge and a T30 last week at the John Deere Classic.
From the late wave, past champ and World No. 145 Dylan Frittelli smoothed a bogey-free 5-under 33-33=66 in R1 of the John Deere Classic, T5 on the board and four short of leader J.T. Poston, who carded a 62 earlier today.
The South African won his lone PGA TOUR title to date on debut in 2019 as a first-time member (not a rookie) and defended in 2021 since there was no event in 2020 (COVID), missing the cut by one (68-71). When he claimed victory in 2019, becoming the first debutant to win the Deere since Sean O'Hair in 2005, he was a pre-tourney 66/1, and also opened with 66 (T10, 4 back) before going on to a 2-shot triumph (66-68-65-64). This year, the Texas alum was a pre-tourney 70/1, missed the cut at last week's Travelers (73-72), ending a streak of 10 consecutive made cuts on the season, and ticked five birdies today on four (of 14) fairways and 11 greens in regulation. At last check, he gained 2.080 strokes tee-to-green, despite losing 0.646 off-the-tee, and 3.209 on-the-green with 24 total putts, beginning with a par-saver at one from 16'4". Dylan Frittelli hopped out of the gate with a 3-under-par 34-33=67 during opening-round action of the Charles Schwab Challenge, just one shot behind the early co-leaders at the top.
The Texas Longhorn product split 9-of-14 fairways and landed 11 greens in regulation. The striking was slightly above average but where he separated himself from the pack was on the greens. That all started with a 33'6" eagle bomb at the par-5 fist hole. He walked off the course gaining 2.2 strokes putting. Frittelli missed the cut in his first two trips to Colonial Country Club (2020, 2021) but he's flipping that script after day one.
