Stankoven also was the winner of the Brad Hornung Memorial Trophy for best sportsmanship. Stankoven, who was taken in the second round, 47th overall, in 2021, had 45 goals and 104 points, good for third overall in the WHL points race. He is leading the WHL in playoff scoring with 17 goals and 31 points in 17 games but has been eliminated from further play as his Kamloops Blazers team fell in seven games to Seattle in the last round. Look for Stankoven to challenge for a job at the NHL level in training camp.

Stankoven is a smart player who does a lot of things well all over the ice, but his lack of size will always be a concern. The 5-foot-8, 170-pounder isn’t shy about competing and getting involved in puck-battles, but he’ll need to be really special to carve out a career as a useful forward in the NHL. His skating isn’t really a strength either. The 18-year-old scored seven goals and three assists in just six WHL games last season and he picked up another four goals and four assists in seven games for Canada at the U-18 World Hockey Championship. We know that he can excel at the junior level, but we have to see if he can keep up at pro level.
