Shesterkin was the heavy favorite to claim this award. He had a 36-13-4 record, 2.07 GAA, and .935 save percentage in 53 contests in 2021-22. His GAA and save percentage were both the best in the NHL among qualified goaltenders. He was the first place choice of 29 of the 32 general managers in the voting, giving him 154 points. Jacob Markstrom finished second with 53 points and Juuse Saros finished third with 32.

Shesterkin had most saves in a single postseason without making it to the Stanley Cup Final. The Rangers were defeated by Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference Final. Shesterkin finished New York's run with 2.59 goals-against average and .929 save percentage. 

Shesterkin was stellar on Saturday, holding the Lightning to just a Steven Stamkos goal for over 53 minutes of ice time. With the game tied at 1-1 with under seven minutes remaining in regulation, though, Stamkos would strike for a second goal -- this one a decisive go-ahead blow -- to push the Rangers out of the postseason. Shesterkin wraps the series having allowed fewer than three goals in four of six games.
