Marner managed a goal against Andrei Vasilevskiy with under nine minutes remaining in regulation. That merely drew Toronto to within 5-2 on the scoreboard, though. Earlier in the contest, the 24-year-old forward had also put in an assist on Michael Bunting's second-period goal. That makes two consecutive multi-point efforts for Marner this series. He posted a goal and two assists in Toronto's Game 1 win. He'll have a chance for a third straight multi-point playoff effort when the series shifts to Tampa Bay for Game 3 on Friday.

Marner has been criticized for his recent playoff performances, and the criticism has a totally been deserved. But he managed to turn in a huge performance in Monday’s opener. He managed to set up Auston Matthews’ power-play tally (2-0) in the second period and he registered the only helper on David Kampf’s shorthanded goal just over three minutes later. Marner ended the frame by extending Toronto’s lead to 4-0. That was his first playoff goal since Apr. 11, 2019. The Leafs are off to a great start, but no one will take them seriously until they get out of the first round.
