Ben Bishop
Player News
Buffalo has acquired Ben Bishop and a 2022 seventh-round draft pick from Dallas in exchange for future considerations.
Bishop's career is over because of a degenerative knee injury, so this is a salary cap move for both teams. It provides the Stars with some additional cap flexibility and it helps the Sabres move closer to the salary-cap floor. Bishop, who has one more season left on his six-year, $29.5 million contract, will end up on LTIR with Buffalo.
Buffalo is reportedly close to acquiring Ben Bishop's contract from the Dallas Stars.
This would be a salary-cap motivated move, as Bishop only has one more season left on his contract and his career is over because of a degenerative knee injury. He has limited NTC that includes a 10-team no-trade list, so he would have to approve the deal if Buffalo is on there.
Ben Bishop will not be able to return from his knee injury.
Bishop missed the entire 2020-21 campaign and he was working to return this season. Unfortunately, that won't happen and consequently his playing career is coming to an end at the age of 35. Bishop's final attempt to return was when he played for AHL Texas on Thursday. He surrendered eight goals on 34 shots. “It’s no secret, he has a degenerative knee injury, and he went down there, he wanted to be a big part of this,” Stars GM Jim Nill said. “He wanted to do everything he could to get back. In the end, by going through the process, going down there and playing, he found out that it’s the end of his career.” It's a terrible way for his career to end, but there is plenty for him to look back on to be proud of his time in the NHL. He posted a 222-128-36 record with a 2.32 GAA, .921 save percentage and 33 shutouts in 413 games.
The Dallas Stars have recalled Ben Bishop from the minors.
Bishop played only one game with the Texas Stars and it was not a pretty one as he gave up eight goals on 34 shots in his first game since Aug. 31, 2020 as he missed all of last season and the first part of the 2021-22 season returning from knee surgery. He will remain on the Stars long-term injured reserve list.
