Ben Chiarot has signed a four-year, $19 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings.
Chiarot scored nine goals and 26 points in 74 contests while averaging 22:51 minutes between his tenures with Montreal and Florida last season. In the 2022 playoffs with the Panthers, he had an assist in 10 games while averaging 17:17 minutes. Chiarot is an okay defenseman, who plays a physical game and will get top-four minutes with Detroit.
Ben Chiarot has been fined $5,000 for head-butting Tampa Bay's Ross Colton.
Chiarot bumped heads with Colton near the midway point of Tuesday's contest. He has one assist, 13 shots, 15 blocks and 22 hits in seven games this postseason.
Ben Chiarot has worked out great for the Panthers.
When the Panthers acquired Chiarot from Montreal in March, Aaron Ekblad was dealing with a lower-body injury. Now that Ekblad is back though, the duo has been paired together for the playoffs. “They are two different guys,” Brunette said. “Ben is a veteran that has been in these series so many different times, so I think it was a good compliment. It’s hard with defense pairings, and unfortunately Ekblad was hurt going into the playoffs and it’s a hard time to build any kind of chemistry, but they are constantly communicating and they feel more comfortable every time.” Chiarot has experience in this role, having previously served as Shea Weber's partner during the Canadiens' run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2021. That playoff run was ultimately ended by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Chiarot will have an opportunity for revenge now that the Panthers are set to face the Lightning in the second round.
Ben Chiarot is expected to be good to go for Game 1 of Round 2 against Tampa Bay, according to coach Andrew Brunette.
Chiarot temporarily left Friday's series-clinching win against Washington on Friday, but he was able to return to the contest. He had one assist, 13 shots, 11 blocks and 18 hits in the first round of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
